Joseph's Brothers Return to Egypt with Benjamin
1The famine in Canaan got worse, 2until finally, Jacob's family had eaten all the grain they had bought in Egypt. So Jacob said to his sons, āGo back and buy some more grain.ā
3-5Judah replied, āThe governor strictly warned us that we would not be allowed to see him unless we brought our youngest brother with us. If you let us take Benjamin along, we will go and buy grain. But we won't go without him!ā
6Jacob asked, āWhy did you cause me so much trouble by telling the governor you had another brother?ā
7They answered, āHe asked a lot of questions about us and our family. He wanted to know if you were still alive and if we had any more brothers. All we could do was answer his questions. How could we know he would tell us to bring along our brother?ā
8Then Judah said to his father, āLet Benjamin go with me, and we will leave at once, so that none of us will starve to death. 9I promise to bring him back safely, and if I don't, you can blame me as long as I live. 10If we had not wasted all this time, we could already have been there and back twice.ā
11Their father said:
If Benjamin must go with you, take the governor a gift of some of the best things from our own country, such as perfume, honey, spices, pistachio nuts, and almonds.#43.11 honey, spices, pistachio nuts, and almonds: Some of these foods were still available in Canaan, but the main food was bread, and there was no grain to make bread. 12Also take along twice the amount of money for the grain, because there must have been some mistake when the money was put back in your sacks. 13Take Benjamin with you and leave at once.
14When you go in to see the governor, I pray that God All-Powerful will be good to you and that the governor will let your other brother and Benjamin come back home with you. But if I must lose my children, I suppose I must.
15The brothers took the gifts, twice the amount of money, and Benjamin. Then they hurried off to Egypt. When they stood in front of Joseph, 16he saw Benjamin and told the servant in charge of his house, āTake these men to my house. Slaughter an animal and cook it, so they can eat with me at noon.ā
17The servant did as he was told and took the brothers to Joseph's house. 18But on the way they got worried and started thinking, āWe are being taken there because of the money that was put back in our sacks last time. He will arrest us, make us his slaves, and take our donkeys.ā
19So when they arrived at Joseph's house, they said to the servant in charge, 20āSir, we came to Egypt once before to buy grain. 21But when we stopped for the night, we each found in our grain sacks the exact amount we had paid. We have brought that money back, 22together with enough money to buy more grain. We don't know who put the money in our sacks.ā
23āIt's all right,ā the servant replied. āDon't worry. The God you and your father worship must have put the money there, because I received your payment in full.ā Then he brought Simeon out to them.
24The servant took them into Joseph's house and gave them water to wash their feet. He also tended their donkeys. 25The brothers got their gifts ready to give to Joseph at noon, since they had heard they were going to eat there.
26When Joseph came home, they gave him the gifts they had brought, and they bowed down to him. 27After Joseph had asked how they were, he said, āWhat about your elderly father? Is he still alive?ā
28They answered, āYour servant our father is still alive and well.ā And again they bowed down to Joseph.
29When Joseph looked around and saw his brother Benjamin, he said, āThis must be your youngest brother, the one you told me about. God bless you, my son.ā
30Then, because of his love for Benjamin, he rushed off to his room and cried. 31After washing his face and returning, he was able to control himself and said, āServe the meal!ā
32Joseph was served at a table by himself, and his brothers were served at another. The Egyptians sat at yet another table, because Egyptians felt it was disgusting to eat with Hebrews. 33To the surprise of Joseph's brothers, they were seated in front of him according to their ages, from the oldest to the youngest. 34They were served food from Joseph's table, and Benjamin was given five times as much as each of the others. So Joseph's brothers ate and drank with him and had a good time.

The Brothers Return to Egypt
1But the famine continued to ravage the land of Canaan. 2When the grain they had brought from Egypt was almost gone, Jacob said to his sons, āGo back and buy us a little more food.ā
3But Judah said, āThe man was serious when he warned us, āYou wonāt see my face again unless your brother is with you.ā 4If you send Benjamin with us, we will go down and buy more food. 5But if you donāt let Benjamin go, we wonāt go either. Remember, the man said, āYou wonāt see my face again unless your brother is with you.āā
6āWhy were you so cruel to me?ā Jacob#43:6 Hebrew Israel; also in 43:11. See note on 35:21. moaned. āWhy did you tell him you had another brother?ā
7āThe man kept asking us questions about our family,ā they replied. āHe asked, āIs your father still alive? Do you have another brother?ā So we answered his questions. How could we know he would say, āBring your brother down hereā?ā
8Judah said to his father, āSend the boy with me, and we will be on our way. Otherwise we will all die of starvationāand not only we, but you and our little ones. 9I personally guarantee his safety. You may hold me responsible if I donāt bring him back to you. Then let me bear the blame forever. 10If we hadnāt wasted all this time, we could have gone and returned twice by now.ā
11So their father, Jacob, finally said to them, āIf it canāt be avoided, then at least do this. Pack your bags with the best products of this land. Take them down to the man as giftsābalm, honey, gum, aromatic resin, pistachio nuts, and almonds. 12Also take double the money that was put back in your sacks, as it was probably someoneās mistake. 13Then take your brother, and go back to the man. 14May God Almighty#43:14 Hebrew El-Shaddai. give you mercy as you go before the man, so that he will release Simeon and let Benjamin return. But if I must lose my children, so be it.ā
15So the men packed Jacobās gifts and double the money and headed off with Benjamin. They finally arrived in Egypt and presented themselves to Joseph. 16When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the manager of his household, āThese men will eat with me this noon. Take them inside the palace. Then go slaughter an animal, and prepare a big feast.ā 17So the man did as Joseph told him and took them into Josephās palace.
18The brothers were terrified when they saw that they were being taken into Josephās house. āItās because of the money someone put in our sacks last time we were here,ā they said. āHe plans to pretend that we stole it. Then he will seize us, make us slaves, and take our donkeys.ā
A Feast at Josephās Palace
19The brothers approached the manager of Josephās household and spoke to him at the entrance to the palace. 20āSir,ā they said, āwe came to Egypt once before to buy food. 21But as we were returning home, we stopped for the night and opened our sacks. Then we discovered that each manās moneyāthe exact amount paidāwas in the top of his sack! Here it is; we have brought it back with us. 22We also have additional money to buy more food. We have no idea who put our money in our sacks.ā
23āRelax. Donāt be afraid,ā the household manager told them. āYour God, the God of your father, must have put this treasure into your sacks. I know I received your payment.ā Then he released Simeon and brought him out to them.
24The manager then led the men into Josephās palace. He gave them water to wash their feet and provided food for their donkeys. 25They were told they would be eating there, so they prepared their gifts for Josephās arrival at noon.
26When Joseph came home, they gave him the gifts they had brought him, then bowed low to the ground before him. 27After greeting them, he asked, āHow is your father, the old man you spoke about? Is he still alive?ā
28āYes,ā they replied. āOur father, your servant, is alive and well.ā And they bowed low again.
29Then Joseph looked at his brother Benjamin, the son of his own mother. āIs this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?ā Joseph asked. āMay God be gracious to you, my son.ā 30Then Joseph hurried from the room because he was overcome with emotion for his brother. He went into his private room, where he broke down and wept. 31After washing his face, he came back out, keeping himself under control. Then he ordered, āBring out the food!ā
32The waiters served Joseph at his own table, and his brothers were served at a separate table. The Egyptians who ate with Joseph sat at their own table, because Egyptians despise Hebrews and refuse to eat with them. 33Joseph told each of his brothers where to sit, and to their amazement, he seated them according to age, from oldest to youngest. 34And Joseph filled their plates with food from his own table, giving Benjamin five times as much as he gave the others. So they feasted and drank freely with him.
