Psalms 60

A Prayer for Deliverance#Ps 60 Hebrew title: A psalm by David, for teaching, when he fought against the Arameans from Naharaim and from Zobah, and Joab turned back and killed 12,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.#2 Sam 8.13; 1 Chr 18.12
1You have rejected us, God, and defeated us;
you have been angry with us — but now turn back to us.#60.1 angry with us… us; or angry with us and turned your back on us.
2You have made the land tremble, and you have cut it open;
now heal its wounds, because it is falling apart.
3You have made your people suffer greatly;
we stagger around as though we were drunk.
4You have warned those who show you reverence,
so that they might escape destruction.
5Save us by your might; answer our prayer,
so that the people you love may be rescued.
6From his sanctuary#60.6 From his sanctuary; or In his holiness. God has said,
“In triumph I will divide Shechem
and distribute the Valley of Sukkoth to my people.
7Gilead is mine, and Manasseh too;
Ephraim is my helmet
and Judah my royal sceptre.
8But I will use Moab as my washbasin
and I will throw my sandals on Edom,
as a sign that I own it.
Did the Philistines think they would shout in triumph over me?”
9Who, O God, will take me into the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
10Have you really rejected us?
Aren't you going to march out with our armies?
11Help us against the enemy;
human help is worthless.
12With God on our side we will win;
he will defeat our enemies.

Psalm 60
For the choir director; according to shushan eduth; #60:0 Unknown musical term. a miktam by David; for teaching. When David fought Aram Naharaim and Aram Zobah, and ⌞when⌟ Joab came back and killed 12,000 men from Edom in the Dead Sea region.
1O God, you have rejected us.
You have broken down our defenses.
You have been angry.
Restore us!
2You made the land quake.
You split it wide open.
Heal the cracks in it
because it is falling apart.
3You have made your people experience hardships.
You have given us wine that makes us stagger.
4Yet, you have raised a flag for those who fear you
so that they can rally to it
when attacked by bows ⌞and arrows⌟. Selah
5Save ⌞us⌟ with your powerful hand, and answer us
so that those who are dear to you may be rescued.#60:5 Verses 5–12 are virtually identical in wording to Psalm 108:6–13.
6God has promised the following through his holiness:
“I will triumph!
I will divide Shechem.
I will measure the valley of Succoth.
7Gilead is mine.
Manasseh is mine.
Ephraim is the helmet on my head.
Judah is my scepter.
8Moab is my washtub.
I will throw my shoe over Edom.
I will shout in triumph over Philistia.”
9Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
10Isn’t it you, O God, who rejected us?
Isn’t it you, O God, who refused to accompany our armies?
11Give us help against the enemy
because human assistance is worthless.
12With God we will display great strength.
He will trample our enemies.
