Psalms 106
106
A nation asks for forgiveness
1We will celebrate#1 Ch 16.34; 2 Ch 5.13; 7.3; Ezra 3.11; Ps 100.5; 107.1; 118.1; 136.1; Jr 33.11.
and praise you, LORD!
You are good to us,
and your love never fails.
2No one can praise you enough
for all the mighty things
you have done.
3You bless those people
who are honest and fair
in everything they do.
4Remember me, LORD,
when you show kindness
by saving your people.
5Let me prosper with the rest
of your chosen ones,
as they celebrate with pride
because they belong to you.
6We and our ancestors
have sinned terribly.
7When they were in Egypt,#Ex 14.10-12.
they paid no attention
to your marvellous deeds
or your wonderful love.
And they turned against you
at the Red Sea.#106.7 Red Sea: Hebrew yam suph “Sea of Reeds”, one of the marshes or fresh water lakes near the eastern part of the Nile Delta. This identification is based on Exodus 13.17—14.9, which lists the towns on the route of the Israelites before crossing the sea. In the Greek translation of the Scriptures made about 200 BC, the “Sea of Reeds” was named “Red Sea”.
8But you were true to your name,
and you rescued them to prove
how mighty you are.
9You said to the Red Sea,#106.9 Red Sea: See the note at 106.7.#Ex 14.21-31.
“Dry up!”
Then you led your people across
on land as dry as a desert.
10You saved all of them
11and drowned every one
of their enemies.
12Then your people trusted you#Ex 15.1-21.
and sang your praises.
13But they soon forgot
what you had done
and rejected your advice.
14They became greedy for food#Nu 11.4-34.
and tested you there
in the desert.
15So you gave them
what they wanted,
but later you destroyed them
with a horrible disease.
16Everyone in camp was jealous#Nu 16.1-35.
of Moses and of Aaron,
your chosen priest.
17Dathan and Abiram rebelled,
and the earth opened up
and swallowed them.
18Then fire broke out
and destroyed all
of their followers.
19At Horeb your people#Ex 32.1-14.
made and worshipped the statue
20of a bull, instead of you,
their glorious God.
21You worked powerful miracles
to save them from Egypt,
but they forgot about you
22and the fearsome things
you did at the Red Sea.#106.22 Red Sea: See the note at 106.7.
23You were angry and started
to destroy them,
but Moses, your chosen leader,
begged you not to do it.
24They would not trust#Nu 14.1-35.
you, LORD,
and they did not like
the promised land.
25They would not obey you,
and they grumbled
in their tents.
26So you threatened them
by saying, “I'll kill you
out here in the desert!
27I'll scatter your children#Lv 26.33.
everywhere in the world.”
28Your people became followers#Nu 25.1-13.
of a god named Baal-Peor,
and they ate sacrifices
offered to the dead.#106.28 the dead: Or “lifeless idols”.
29They did such terrible things
that you punished them
with a deadly disease.
30But Phinehas#106.30 Phinehas: The grandson of Aaron, who put two people to death and kept the Lord from being angry with the rest of his people (see Numbers 25.1-13). helped them,
and the sickness stopped.
31Now he will always
be highly honoured.
32At Meribah Spring#106.32 Meribah Spring: See the note at 81.7.#Nu 20.2-13.
they turned against you
and made you furious.
33Then Moses got into trouble
for speaking in anger.
34Our LORD, they disobeyed you#Jg 2.1-3; 3.5,6.
by refusing to destroy
the nations.
35Instead they were friendly
with those foreigners
and followed their customs.
36Then they fell into the trap
of worshipping idols.
37They sacrificed their sons#2 K 17.17.
and their daughters to demons
38and to the gods of Canaan.#Nu 35.33.
Then they poured out the blood
of these innocent children
and made the land filthy.
39By doing such gruesome things,
they also became filthy.
40Finally, LORD, you were angry#Jg 2.14-18.
and terribly disgusted
with your people.
41So you put them in the power
of nations that hated them.
42They were ill-treated and abused
by their enemies,
43but you saved them
time after time.
They were determined to rebel,
and their sins caused
their downfall.
44You answered their prayers
when they were in trouble.
45You kept your agreement
and were so merciful
46that their enemies
had pity on them.
47Save us, LORD God!#1 Ch 16.35,36.
Bring us back
from among the nations.
Let us celebrate and shout
in praise of your holy name.
48 LORD God of Israel,
you deserve to be praised
for ever and ever.
Let everyone say, “Amen!
Shout praises to the LORD!”

Psalms 106
106
1Praise the Lord!
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever.
2Who can list the glorious miracles of the Lord?
Who can ever praise him enough?
3There is joy for those who deal justly with others
and always do what is right.
4Remember me, Lord, when you show favor to your people;
come near and rescue me.
5Let me share in the prosperity of your chosen ones.
Let me rejoice in the joy of your people;
let me praise you with those who are your heritage.
6Like our ancestors, we have sinned.
We have done wrong! We have acted wickedly!
7Our ancestors in Egypt
were not impressed by the Lord’s miraculous deeds.
They soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them.
Instead, they rebelled against him at the Red Sea.#106:7 Hebrew at the sea, the sea of reeds.
8Even so, he saved them—
to defend the honor of his name
and to demonstrate his mighty power.
9He commanded the Red Sea#106:9 Hebrew sea of reeds; also in 106:22. to dry up.
He led Israel across the sea as if it were a desert.
10So he rescued them from their enemies
and redeemed them from their foes.
11Then the water returned and covered their enemies;
not one of them survived.
12Then his people believed his promises.
Then they sang his praise.
13Yet how quickly they forgot what he had done!
They wouldn’t wait for his counsel!
14In the wilderness their desires ran wild,
testing God’s patience in that dry wasteland.
15So he gave them what they asked for,
but he sent a plague along with it.
16The people in the camp were jealous of Moses
and envious of Aaron, the Lord’s holy priest.
17Because of this, the earth opened up;
it swallowed Dathan
and buried Abiram and the other rebels.
18Fire fell upon their followers;
a flame consumed the wicked.
19The people made a calf at Mount Sinai#106:19 Hebrew at Horeb, another name for Sinai.;
they bowed before an image made of gold.
20They traded their glorious God
for a statue of a grass-eating bull.
21They forgot God, their savior,
who had done such great things in Egypt—
22such wonderful things in the land of Ham,
such awesome deeds at the Red Sea.
23So he declared he would destroy them.
But Moses, his chosen one, stepped between the Lord and the people.
He begged him to turn from his anger and not destroy them.
24The people refused to enter the pleasant land,
for they wouldn’t believe his promise to care for them.
25Instead, they grumbled in their tents
and refused to obey the Lord.
26Therefore, he solemnly swore
that he would kill them in the wilderness,
27that he would scatter their descendants#106:27 As in Syriac version; Hebrew reads he would cause their descendants to fall. among the nations,
exiling them to distant lands.
28Then our ancestors joined in the worship of Baal at Peor;
they even ate sacrifices offered to the dead!
29They angered the Lord with all these things,
so a plague broke out among them.
30But Phinehas had the courage to intervene,
and the plague was stopped.
31So he has been regarded as a righteous man
ever since that time.
32At Meribah, too, they angered the Lord,
causing Moses serious trouble.
33They made Moses angry,#106:33 Hebrew They embittered his spirit.
and he spoke foolishly.
34Israel failed to destroy the nations in the land,
as the Lord had commanded them.
35Instead, they mingled among the pagans
and adopted their evil customs.
36They worshiped their idols,
which led to their downfall.
37They even sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to the demons.
38They shed innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters.
By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan,
they polluted the land with murder.
39They defiled themselves by their evil deeds,
and their love of idols was adultery in the Lord’s sight.
40That is why the Lord’s anger burned against his people,
and he abhorred his own special possession.
41He handed them over to pagan nations,
and they were ruled by those who hated them.
42Their enemies crushed them
and brought them under their cruel power.
43Again and again he rescued them,
but they chose to rebel against him,
and they were finally destroyed by their sin.
44Even so, he pitied them in their distress
and listened to their cries.
45He remembered his covenant with them
and relented because of his unfailing love.
46He even caused their captors
to treat them with kindness.
47Save us, O Lord our God!
Gather us back from among the nations,
so we can thank your holy name
and rejoice and praise you.
48Praise the Lord, the God of Israel,
who lives from everlasting to everlasting!
Let all the people say, “Amen!”
Praise the Lord!
