Hebrews 1

The greatness of God's Son
1Long ago in many ways and at many times God's prophets spoke his message to our ancestors. 2But now at last, God sent his Son to bring his message to us. God created the universe by his Son, and everything will some day belong to the Son. 3God's Son has all the brightness of God's own glory and is like him in every way. By his own mighty word, he holds the universe together.
After the Son had washed away our sins, he sat down at the right side#1.3 right side: The place of honour and power. of the glorious God in heaven. 4He had become much greater than the angels, and the name he was given is far greater than any of theirs.
Jesus is greater than angels
5God has never said#Ps 2.7; 2 S 7.14; 1 Ch 17.13.
to any of the angels,
“You are my Son, because today
I have become your Father!”
Neither has God said
to any of them,
“I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son!”
6When God brings his firstborn Son#1.6 firstborn Son: The first son born into a family had certain privileges that the other children did not have. In 12.23 “firstborn” refers to God's special people. into the world, he commands all his angels to worship him.#Dt 32.43 (LXX).
7And when God speaks about the angels, he says,#Ps 104.4 (LXX).
“I change my angels into wind
and my servants
into flaming fire.”
8But God says about his Son,#Ps 45.6,7.
“You are God,
and you will rule
as King for ever!
Your#1.8 Your: Some manuscripts have “His”. royal power
brings about justice.
9You loved justice
and hated evil,
and so I, your God,
have chosen you.
I appointed you
and made you happier
than any of your friends.”
10The Scriptures also say,#Ps 102.25-27 (LXX).
“In the beginning, Lord,
you were the one
who laid the foundation
of the earth
and created the heavens.
11They will all disappear
and wear out like clothes,
but you will last for ever.
12You will roll them up
like a robe
and change them
like a garment.
But you are always the same,
and you will live for ever.”
13God never said to any#Ps 110.1.
of the angels,
“Sit at my right side
until I make your enemies
into a footstool for you!”
14Angels are merely spirits sent to serve people who are going to be saved.

The Nature of the Son
1Long ago God spoke # Jn 9:29; Heb 2:2-3 to the fathers by the prophets # 2Kg 17:13; 21:10; 24:2; Jr 7:25; 26:5; 29:19; 35:15; 44:4; Ezk 38:17; Dn 9:6; Hs 12:10; Zch 1:6; 8:9; Mt 2:23; Lk 1:70; 24:44; Ac 2:30; 3:21,24 at different times and in different ways. # Nm 12:6,8; Jl 2:28 2In these last days, # Ac 2:17; Gl 4:4; 2Tm 3:1; 2Pt 3:3; Jd 18 He has spoken to us by His Son. God has appointed Him heir of all things # Jr 3:19; 10:16; Zch 8:12 and made the universe # Lit ages # Ps 2:8; Jn 1:3; Col 1:16; Rv 4:11 through Him. 3The Son is the radiance # Or reflection of God’s glory and the exact expression # Or representation, or copy, or reproduction of His nature, # 2Co 4:4 sustaining all things by His powerful word. # Ps 33:6 After making purification for sins, # Other mss read for our sins by Himself He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. # Or He sat down on high at the right hand of the Majesty # Mt 22:44; Mk 16:19; Col 1:17 4So He became higher in rank than the angels, just as the name He inherited is superior to theirs. # Eph 1:21; Php 2:9
The Son Superior to Angels
5For to which of the angels did He ever say, You are My Son; today I have become Your Father, # Or have begotten You # Ps 2:7 or again, I will be His Father, and He will be My Son? # 2Sm 7:14; Ps 2:7; Ac 13:33 # 2Sm 7:14; 1Ch 17:13 6When He again # Or And again, when He brings His firstborn into the world, # Col 1:15,18; Rv 1:5 He says, And all God’s angels must worship Him. # Dt 32:43; Ps 97:7 # Dt 32:43 LXX; Ps 97:7 7And about the angels He says:
He makes His angels winds, # Or spirits
and His servants # Or ministers a fiery flame, # Ps 104:4 # Ps 104:4
8but to # Or about the Son:
Your throne, God,
is forever and ever,
and the scepter of Your kingdom
is a scepter of justice. # Ps 45:6-7
9You have loved righteousness
and hated lawlessness;
this is why God, Your God,
has anointed You
with the oil of joy # Is 61:1,3; Php 2:9
rather than Your companions. # Or associates # Ps 45:6-7
10And:
In the beginning, Lord,
You established the earth,
and the heavens are the works of Your hands; # Ps 102:25
11they will perish, but You remain.
They will all wear out like clothing; # Is 50:9; 51:6
12You will roll them up like a cloak, # Other mss omit like a cloak
and they will be changed like a robe.
But You are the same,
and Your years will never end. # Ps 102:26-27; Heb 13:8 # Ps 102:25-27
13Now to which of the angels has He ever said:
Sit at My right hand
until I make Your enemies Your footstool? # Or enemies a footstool for Your feet # Jos 10:24; Ps 110:1; Mt 22:44; Mk 12:36; Ac 2:34-35; Heb 10:13 # Ps 110:1
14Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve those who are going to inherit salvation? # Ps 103:20; Mt 18:10; Heb 5:9
