2 Peter 1

Greetings and prayer
1From Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ.
To everyone who shares with us in the privilege of believing that our God and Saviour Jesus Christ will do what is just and fair.#1.1 To everyone who…just and fair: Or “To everyone whose faith in the justice and fairness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ is as precious as our own faith.”
2I pray that God will be kind to you and will let you live in perfect peace! May you keep learning more and more about God and our Lord Jesus.
How the Lord's followers should live
3We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God's own power, when we learnt that he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. 4God made great and marvellous promises, so that his nature would become part of us. Then we could escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world.
5Do your best to improve your faith. You can do this by adding goodness, understanding, 6self-control, patience, devotion to God, 7concern for others, and love. 8If you keep growing in this way, it will show that what you know about our Lord Jesus Christ has made your lives useful and meaningful. 9But if you don't grow, you are like someone who is nearsighted or blind, and you have forgotten that your past sins are forgiven.
10My friends, you must do all you can to show that God has really chosen and selected you. If you keep on doing this, you won't stumble and fall. 11Then our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will give you a glorious welcome into his kingdom that will last for ever.
12You are holding firmly to the truth that you were given. But I am still going to remind you of these things. 13In fact, I think I should keep on reminding you until I leave this body. 14And our Lord Jesus Christ has already told me that I will soon leave it behind. 15That is why I am doing my best to make sure that each of you remembers all this after I am gone.
The glory of Christ
16When we told you about the power and the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not telling clever stories that someone had made up. But with our own eyes we saw his true greatness. 17God, our great and wonderful Father, truly honoured him by saying, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him.”#Mt 17.1-5; Mk 9.2-7; Lk 9.28-35. 18We were there with Jesus on the holy mountain and heard this voice speak from heaven.
19All this makes us even more certain that what the prophets said is true. So you should pay close attention to their message, as you would to a lamp shining in some dark place. You must keep on paying attention until daylight comes and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20But you need to realize that no one alone can understand any of the prophecies in the Scriptures. 21The prophets did not think these things up on their own, but they were guided by the Spirit of God.

Greeting
1Simeon # Other mss read Simon Peter, # Mt 16:17; Lk 6:14; Ac 10:32; 15:14 a slave and an apostle # Rm 1:1; Ti 1:1 of Jesus Christ:
To those who have obtained a faith of equal privilege with ours # Or obtained a faith of the same kind as ours through the righteousness # Rm 5:17,21; Php 1:11 of our God and Savior # Ti 2:13 Jesus Christ.
2May grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God # Jn 17:3; Php 3:8; 2Pt 1:3,8; 2:20; 3:18 and of Jesus our Lord.
Growth in the Faith
3His # Lit As His divine power # 1Pt 1:5 has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge # Jn 17:3; Php 3:8; 2Pt 1:2,8; 2:20; 3:18 of Him who called # 1Th 2:12; 2Th 2:14; 1Pt 5:10 us by # Or to His own glory and goodness. 4By these He has given us very great and precious promises, # Jos 21:45; 1Kg 8:56; Is 38:16; Jr 33:14; Rm 9:4; 15:8; 2Co 7:1 so that through them you may share in the divine nature, # Eph 4:24; Heb 12:10; 1Jn 3:2 escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires. 5For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, 6knowledge with self-control, # Ac 24:25; Gl 5:23 self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, 7godliness with brotherly affection, # Rm 12:10; Heb 13:1; 1Pt 1:22 and brotherly affection with love. 8For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they will keep you from being useless # Jms 2:20 or unfruitful # Mt 7:16-21; Gl 5:22; Ti 3:14 in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9The person who lacks these things is blind and shortsighted and has forgotten the cleansing from his past sins. 10Therefore, brothers, make every effort to confirm your calling and election, # Mt 22:14; Rm 11:29; 2Pt 1:3 because if you do these things you will never stumble. 11For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom # Col 1:13; 2Tm 4:18 of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly supplied to you.
12Therefore I will always remind you about these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth # 2Co 11:10; Col 1:5-6; 2Jn 2; 3Jn 3-4 you have. 13I consider it right, as long as I am in this bodily tent, # = Peter’s body # 2Co 5:1-4 to wake you up with a reminder, 14knowing that I will soon lay aside my tent, as our Lord Jesus Christ has also shown me. # Jn 21:18-23 15And I will also make every effort that you may be able to recall these things at any time after my departure. # Or my death
The Trustworthy Prophetic Word
16For we did not follow cleverly contrived myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; # Mk 13:26; 14:62; 1Th 2:19 instead, we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. # Mt 17:1-6 17For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, a voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory:
This is My beloved Son. # Other mss read My Son, My Beloved
I take delight in Him! # = Christ’s transfiguration; Mt 17:5 # Is 42:1; Mt 3:17; 17:5; Mk 1:11; 9:7; Lk 3:22
18And we heard this voice when it came from heaven while we were with Him on the holy mountain. # Ps 2:6; Mt 17:1; Mk 9:2; Lk 9:28 19So we have the prophetic word strongly confirmed. You will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dismal place, # Ps 119:105 until the day dawns # Mal 4:2; Rm 13:12; 2Pt 3:18 and the morning star # Nm 24:17; Rv 22:16 rises in your hearts. 20First of all, you should know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation, 21because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; # Jr 23:26; 2Tm 3:16 instead, men spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. # 2Sm 23:2; Lk 1:70; Ac 1:16; 3:18; 1Pt 1:11
