The Family Line of Jesus the Messiah
1This is the family line of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
2Abraham was the father of Isaac.
Isaac was the father of Jacob.
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah, and Tamar was their mother.
Perez was the father of Hezron.
Hezron was the father of Ram.
4Ram was the father of Amminadab.
Amminadab was the father of Nahshon.
Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
5Salmon was the father of Boaz, and Rahab was his mother.
Boaz was the father of Obed, and Ruth was his mother.
Obed was the father of Jesse.
6Jesse was the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon, and his mother was Bathsheba, who had been Uriah’s wife.
7Solomon was the father of Rehoboam.
Rehoboam was the father of Abijah.
Abijah was the father of Asa.
8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat.
Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram.
Jehoram was the father of Uzziah.
9Uzziah was the father of Jotham.
Jotham was the father of Ahaz.
Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh.
Manasseh was the father of Amon.
Amon was the father of Josiah.
11Josiah was the father of Jeconiah and his brothers. In their time, the Jewish people were taken into exile in Babylon.
12After the exile to Babylon, the family line continued.
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel.
Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel.
13Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud.
Abihud was the father of Eliakim.
Eliakim was the father of Azor.
14Azor was the father of Zadok.
Zadok was the father of Akim.
Akim was the father of Elihud.
15Elihud was the father of Eleazar.
Eleazar was the father of Matthan.
Matthan was the father of Jacob.
16Jacob was the father of Joseph.
Joseph was the husband of Mary, who was the mother of Jesus, who is called the Messiah.
17So there were 14 generations from Abraham to David, there were 14 generations from David until the Jewish people were taken into exile in Babylon, and there were 14 generations from that time until the Messiah.
Jesus is Born to a Virgin
18This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother Mary had promised to marry a man named Joseph. But before they lived together, she became pregnant. This happened by the power of the Holy Spirit, but Joseph didn’t know that. 19He thought that Mary hadn’t been faithful to him. He wanted to follow the law of Moses and didn't want to put her to shame in public. So he planned to break up with her quietly.
20But as Joseph was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary home as your wife. The baby inside her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She’s going to have a son, and you’re to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
22All this took place to make what the Lord had said through the prophet Isaiah come true. He’d said, 23“The virgin is going to have a baby. She will give birth to a son, and he will be called Immanuel.” The name Immanuel means “God with us.”
24When Joseph got up the next morning, he did just what the angel of the Lord had commanded him to do. He took Mary home as his wife, 25but he didn’t sleep with her before she’d given birth to a son. And Joseph gave him the name Jesus.

another fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile,
and yet another fourteen from the Babylonian exile to Christ.
The Birth of Jesus
18-19The birth of Jesus took place like this. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. Before they enjoyed their wedding night, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. (It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn’t know that.) Joseph, chagrined but noble, determined to take care of things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced.
20-23While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God’s angel spoke in the dream: “Joseph, son of David, don’t hesitate to get married. Mary’s pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God’s Holy Spirit has made her pregnant. She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus—‘God saves’—because he will save his people from their sins.” This would bring the prophet’s embryonic revelation to full term:
Watch for this—a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son;
They will name him Immanuel (Hebrew for “God is with us”).
24-25Then Joseph woke up. He did exactly what God’s angel commanded in the dream: He married Mary. But he did not consummate the marriage until she had the baby. He named the baby Jesus.
