Proverbs 13

1A wise son accepts his father's discipline, but a mocker doesn't listen to correction.

2You'll be rewarded for saying good things, but dishonest people want violence.

3Watch what you say and save your life—saying too much leads to disaster.

4Lazy people want a lot, but get nothing; if you work hard you'll be well rewarded.

5Good people hate lies, but the wicked cause a stink and bring disgrace.

6Goodness protects those who live right, but sin overcomes the wicked.

7Some pretend to be rich, but don't have anything, while others pretend to be poor and are very rich.

8The rich can pay a ransom to save their lives, but the poor aren't troubled in this way.#13:8. The meaning of the Hebrew in the second line is not clear.

9The life of good people shines brightly,#13:9. “Shines brightly”: or, “causes joy.” but the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.

10Pride only causes conflict; but those who take advice are wise.

11Wealth gained by fraud quickly disappears, but those who gather bit by bit prosper.

12Hope that's delayed makes you feel sick, but a wish that comes true revives you.#13:12. “Revives you”: literally, “a tree of life.”

13If you despise words of advice, you'll pay for it; but if you respect what you're told, you'll be rewarded.

14The teaching of the wise is like a fountain of life, so you can avoid the snares of death.

15Good sense earns appreciation, but the way of the unfaithful is hard.#13:15. “The way of the unfaithful is hard.” Septuagint version: “the ways of scorners lead to destruction.”

16All wise people act intelligently, but stupid people demonstrate their stupidity.

17A bad messenger creates#13:17. “Creates”: literally, “falls into.” trouble, but a faithful representative brings healing.

18Poverty and disgrace come to those who ignore instruction, but those who accept correction are honored.

19It's nice to see a wish come true, but stupid people hate to turn away from evil to achieve this.

20Being friends with wise people will make you wise, but being friends with stupid people will only cause you problems.

21Tragedy chases after the sinner, but prosperity rewards the good.

22Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner's wealth is saved for those who live right.

23The unplowed ground of the poor could produce a lot of food, but it's stolen through injustice.

24People who don't discipline their children hate them. Those who love their children carefully discipline them.

25The good eat until they're full; but the belly of the wicked is empty.

Proverbs 13

A Wise Son Lives Righteously

1A wise son listens to his father’s discipline,

but a mocker does not listen to reprimands.

2A person eats well as a result of his speaking ability,

but the appetite of treacherous people ⌞craves⌟ violence.

3Whoever controls his mouth protects his own life.

Whoever has a big mouth comes to ruin.

4A lazy person craves food and there is none,

but the appetite of hard-working people is satisfied.

5A righteous person hates lying,

but a wicked person behaves with shame and disgrace.

6Righteousness protects the honest way of life,

but wickedness ruins a sacrifice for sin.

7One person pretends to be rich but has nothing.

Another pretends to be poor but has great wealth.

8A person’s riches are the ransom for his life,

but the poor person does not pay attention to threats.

9The light of righteous people beams brightly,

but the lamp of wicked people will be snuffed out.

10Arrogance produces only quarreling,

but those who take advice gain wisdom.

11Wealth ⌞gained⌟ through injustice dwindles away,

but whoever gathers little by little has plenty.

12Delayed hope makes one sick at heart,

but a fulfilled longing is a tree of life.

13Whoever despises ⌞God’s⌟ words will pay the penalty,

but the one who fears ⌞God’s⌟ commands will be rewarded.

14The teachings of a wise person are a fountain of life

to turn ⌞one⌟ away from the grasp of death.

15Good sense brings favor,

but the way of treacherous people is always the same.#13:15 Masoretic Text; Greek “is their disaster.”

16Any sensible person acts with knowledge,

but a fool displays stupidity.

17An undependable messenger gets into trouble,

but a dependable envoy brings healing.

18Poverty and shame come to a person who ignores discipline,

but whoever pays attention to constructive criticism will be honored.

19A fulfilled desire is sweet to the soul,

but turning from evil is disgusting to fools.

20Whoever walks with wise people will be wise,

but whoever associates with fools will suffer.

21Disaster hunts down sinners,

but righteous people are rewarded with good.

22Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren,

but the wealth of sinners is stored away for a righteous person.

23When poor people are able to plow, there is much food,

but a person is swept away where there is no justice.

24Whoever refuses to spank his son hates him,

but whoever loves his son disciplines him from early on.

25A righteous person eats to satisfy his appetite,

but the bellies of wicked people are always empty.
