Matthew 28
28
1After Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week,#28:1. This would correspond to the day we identify as Sunday. The text clearly identifies this as “day one,” the day after the Sabbath “the seventh day.” Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2All of a sudden there was a tremendous earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and rolled away the stone, and sat on it. 3His face blazed like lightning, and his clothes were as white as snow. 4The guards shook with fear, falling down as if they were dead.
5The angel told the women, “Don't be afraid! I know you're looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He's not here. He's risen from the dead, just as he said he would. Come and see where the Lord was lying. 7Now go quickly and tell his disciples that he's risen from the dead and that he's going on ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, I promise you!”
8They quickly left the tomb, both afraid and very happy, running to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus came to meet them, and greeted them. They went over to him, held on to his feet and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Don't be afraid! Go and tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there.”
11As they left, some of the guards went into the city and explained to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12After the chief priests had met with the elders, and worked out a plan, they bribed the soldiers with a great deal of money.
13“Say that his disciples came during the night and stole him while we were sleeping,” they told the soldiers. 14“And if the governor hears about this, we'll talk to him and you won't have to worry.”
15So the soldiers took the money and did what they were told. This story has been spread among the Jewish people to this very day.
16But the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him they worshiped him, though some doubted. 18Jesus came to them and told them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19So go and make disciples of people of all nations, and baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 20Teach them to follow all the commands I have given you. Remember, I am always with you, to the very end of the world.”

The Resurrection
1 # For ver. 1-8, see Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-10; John 20:1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and #ch. 27:56, 61the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2And behold, there was a great earthquake, for #[John 20:12]an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3#Dan. 10:6 His appearance was like lightning, and #[Dan. 7:9; Mark 9:3; John 20:12; Acts 1:10]his clothing white as snow. 4And for fear of him the guards trembled and #[Rev. 1:17]became like dead men. 5But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6He is not here, for he has risen, #ch. 27:63as he said. The Report of the Guard
11While they were going, behold, some of #ch. 27:65, 66the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13and said, “Tell people, #[ch. 27:64]‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14And if this comes to #ch. 27:2 the governor’s ears, we will #See Acts 12:20 (Gk.)satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews #ch. 27:8to this day.
