1Every high priest is chosen from the people and is appointed to work for the people as they relate to God. He presents to God both their gifts and sacrifices for their sins. 2The high priest understands how ignorant and deluded people feel because he also experiences the same kind of human weaknesses. 3As a result he has to offer sacrifices for his sins as well as for those of the people. 4No one can take the position of high priest for himself; he must be chosen by God, just like Aaron was. 5In just the same way Christ did not honor himself by becoming high priest. It was God who said to him, “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.”#5:5. Quoting Psalms 2:7. 6In another verse, God says, “You are a priest forever, following the order of Melchizedek.”#5:6. Quoting Psalms 110:4. 7Jesus, while he was here in human form, prayed and appealed with loud cries and tears to God, the one who was able to save him from death. Jesus was heard because of his respect for God. 8Even though he was God's Son, Jesus learned through suffering what obedience really means.#5:8. The usual translation that Jesus “learned obedience through suffering” could suggest that Jesus was not originally obedient, or that suffering was necessary in order for him to learn—both rather strange ideas to place on Jesus, the pre-existing Son of God. The thought here appears to be that even though Jesus was God's Son, his earthly expereince demonstrated the cost and consequences of obedience. In some ways this parallels Jesus request to have the cup of suffering taken away from him, but then he surrenders his will in obedience to his Father. See Matthew 26:39. 9When his experience was complete,#5:9. Avoiding the term “having been made perfect,” which in the minds of some might suggest he wasn't perfect in the first place. he became the source of eternal salvation to everyone who does what he says, 10having been designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
11We have much to say about Jesus, and it's hard to explain because you don't seem able to understand! 12By now you should have had enough time to become teachers, but you need someone to teach you the fundamentals, the first principles of God's word. It's like you need to go back to baby milk instead of solid food! 13Those who drink baby milk don't have the experience of living the right way—they're just babies. 14Solid food is for grown-ups—those who by always using their brains have learned to tell the difference between good and evil.

A High Priest Like Melchizedek
1 For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of people in the things relating to God, in order that he can offer both gifts and sacrifices on behalf of sins, 2being able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and led astray, since he himself also is surrounded by weakness, 3and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins for himself also, as well as for the people#Literally “as for the people so also for himself”. 4And someone does not take for himself the honor, but is called by God, just as Aaron also was. 5Thus also Christ did not glorify himself to become high priest, but the one who said to him,
“You are my Son, today I have begotten you,”#A quotation from Ps 2:7
6just as also in another place he says,
“You are a priest forever#Literally “for the age” according to the order of Melchizedek,”#A quotation from Ps 110:4
7who in the days of his flesh offered up both prayers and supplications, with loud crying and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard as a result of his reverence. 8Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered, 9and being perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation to all those who obey him, 10being designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

11Concerning this#Literally “which” we have much to say and it is difficult to explain#Literally “great for us the message and hard to explain to say”, since you have become sluggish in hearing. 12For indeed, although you#*Here “although” is supplied as a component of the participle (“ought”) which is understood as concessive ought to be teachers by this time#Literally “because of the time”, you have need of someone to teach you again the beginning elements of the oracles of God, and you have need of#Literally “you are having need of” milk, not#Some manuscripts have “and not” solid food. 13For everyone who partakes of milk is unacquainted with the message of righteousness, because he is an infant. 14But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have trained their faculties for the distinguishing of both good and evil.
