2 Samuel 9
9
1David said, “Is there anyone still left of Saul's family so I can be kind to him for Jonathan's sake?”
2There was a man called Ziba who used to be a servant of Saul's family. They called for him to come to David, and the king asked him, “Are you Ziba?”
“Yes, I am your servant,” he replied.
3The king asked him, “Is there anyone still left of Saul's family so I can be kind to him as I promised before God?”#9:3. “I promised before God”: David is probably remembering the mutual promise shared with Jonathan. 1 Samuel 20:42.
“There's still one of Jonathan's sons, who is lame in both feet,” Ziba replied.
4“Where is he?” asked the king.
“He's in the town of Lo-debar, living in the home of Machir, son of Ammiel,” Ziba replied.
5So King David had him brought from Machir's home. 6When Mephibosheth,#9:6. He is called Meribbaal in 1 Chronicles 8:34 and 1 Chronicles 9:40. The same issue arises here as given in the footnote to 2:8. son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David, he bowed facedown to the ground in respect. Then David said, “Welcome, Mephibosheth.”
“I am your servant,” he replied.
7“Do not be afraid,” said David, “for I will truly be kind to you for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will return to you all the land owned by your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”
8Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “Who am I, your servant, that you should pay any attention to a dead dog like me?”
9Then the king called for Saul's servant Ziba and told him, “I have given to your master's grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family. 10You and your sons and workers are to farm the ground for him and bring in the produce, so that your master's grandson will have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master's grandson, will always eat at my table.” Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty workers.
11Ziba replied to the king, “My lord the king, your servant will do everything that you have commanded.” So Mephibosheth ate at David's table like one of the king's sons. 12Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica. All the people who lived in Ziba's house became Mephibosheth's servants. 13But Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king's table. He was lame in both feet.

Covenant Loyalty to Mephibosheth
1Then David inquired, “Is there anyone still left from the house of Saul, so that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”
2Now there was a servant from Saul’s house whose name was Ziba, so they summoned him to David. The king asked him, “Are you Ziba?” “Your servant,” he said.
3The king asked him, “Is there still anyone from the house of Saul to whom I may show the kindness of God?” “There is still a son of Jonathan,” Ziba said to the king, “with crippled legs.”
4“Where is he?” the king said to him. Ziba said to the king, “He’s there, in the house of Machir son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.”
5So King David sent word and brought him from the house of Machir son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar.
6Then Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan son of Saul, came to David, fell on his face and prostrated himself. “Mephibosheth!” David said. “Behold your servant!” he answered. “Don’t be afraid,”
7David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat bread at my table.”
8Then he bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should turn to look at such a dead dog like me?”
9Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his household I have given to your master’s son.
10So you, you and your sons and your servants will till the land for him, and you will bring in the yield so that your master’s son may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth your master’s son will always eat bread at my table.” Now Ziba had 15 sons and 20 servants.
11Then Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so will your servant do.” Thus Mephibosheth used to eat at the table just like one of the king’s sons.
12Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. All the members of Ziba’s household were servants to Mephibosheth.
13But Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate at the king’s table regularly, though he was crippled in both his legs.
