Wisdom’s Worth
1My son, if you accept my words#Pr 4:10
and store up my commands within you,
2listening closely#2:2 Lit you, stretching out your ear to wisdom
and directing your heart to understanding;
3furthermore, if you call out to insight
and lift your voice to understanding,
4if you seek it like silver
and search for it like hidden treasure,#Jb 3:21; Mt 13:44
5then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and discover the knowledge of God.
6For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.#Jb 32:8
7He stores up success#2:7 Or resourcefulness for the upright;
He is a shield for those who live with integrity#Ps 84:11; Pr 10:9; 20:7; 28:18; 30:5
8so that he may guard the paths of justice
and protect the way of his faithful followers.#1Sm 2:9; Ps 66:9
9Then you will understand righteousness, justice,
and integrity — every good path.
10For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will delight you.
11Discretion will watch over you,
and understanding will guard you.#Pr 4:6; 6:22
12It will rescue you from the way of evil —
from anyone who says perverse things,
13from those who abandon the right paths
to walk in ways of darkness,#Ps 82:5; Pr 15:19; 16:17; Jn 3:19,20
14from those who enjoy doing evil#Pr 10:23
and celebrate perversion,
15whose paths are crooked,#Ps 125:5; Pr 21:8
and whose ways are devious.#Pr 3:32; 14:2
16It will rescue you from a forbidden woman,#Pr 9:13–18
from a wayward woman with her flattering talk,#Pr 5:3,20; 6:24; 7:5,21; 23:27
17who abandons the companion of her youth#Mal 2:14–15
and forgets the covenant of her God;
18for her house sinks down to death
and her ways to the land of the departed spirits.#Pr 7:27; 9:18; 21:16
19None return who go to her;
none reach the paths of life.#Ps 16:11; Pr 5:6; 7:5,21–27; 23:27–28; Ec 7:26
20So follow the way of the good,#Heb 6:12
and keep to the paths of the righteous.
21For the upright will inhabit the land,
and those of integrity will remain in it;#Pr 10:30; Mt 5:5–6
22but the wicked will be cut off from the land,#Ps 37:38
and the treacherous ripped out of it.#Dt 28:63; Ps 52:5

The Benefit of Wisdom
1My son,
if you take my words ⌞to heart⌟
and treasure my commands within you,
2if you pay close attention to wisdom,
and let your mind reach for understanding,
3if indeed you call out for insight,
if you ask aloud for understanding,
4if you search for wisdom as if it were money
and hunt for it as if it were hidden treasure,
5then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and you will find the knowledge of God.
6The Lord gives wisdom.
From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7He has reserved priceless wisdom for decent people.
He is a shield for those who walk in integrity
8in order to guard those on paths of justice
and to watch over the way of his godly ones.
9Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—
every good course ⌞in life⌟.
10Wisdom will come into your heart.
Knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11Foresight will protect you.
Understanding will guard you.
12 ⌞Wisdom will⌟ save you
from the way of evil,
from the person who speaks devious things,
13from those who abandon the paths of righteousness
to walk the ways of darkness,
14from those who enjoy doing evil,
from those who find joy in the deviousness of evil.
15Their paths are crooked.
Their ways are devious.
16 ⌞Wisdom will⌟ also save you
from an adulterous woman,
from a loose woman with her smooth talk,
17who leaves ⌞her husband,⌟ the closest friend of her youth,
and forgets her marriage vows to her God.
18Her house sinks down to death.
Her ways lead to the souls of the dead.
19None who have sex with her come back.
Nor do they ever reach the paths of life.
20So walk in the way of good people
and stay on the paths of righteous people.
21Decent people will live in the land.
People of integrity will remain in it.
22But wicked people will be cut off from the land
and treacherous people will be torn #2:22 Or “will be swept away.” from it.
