The Parable of the Wedding Banquet
1Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables: 2“The kingdom of heaven#Lk 14:16–24 is like a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son.#Mt 13:24; Lk 12:36; Jn 2:2; Rv 19:7 3He sent his servants to summon those invited to the banquet,#Est 6:14; Pr 9:3,5 but they didn’t want to come. 4Again, he sent out other servants and said, ‘Tell those who are invited: See, I’ve prepared my dinner; my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’#Pr 9:2; Mt 21:36
5 “But they paid no attention and went away, one to his own farm, another to his business, 6while the rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. 7The king#22:7 Other mss read But when the (that) king heard about it he was enraged, and he sent out his troops, killed those murderers, and burned down their city.
8 “Then he told his servants, ‘The banquet is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. #
Mt 10:11; Ac 13:46 9Go then to where the roads exit the city and invite everyone you find to the banquet.’#Ezk 21:21; Ob 14 10So those servants went out on the roads and gathered everyone they found, both evil and good. The wedding banquet was filled with guests.#22:10 Lit those reclining (to eat) 11When the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed for a wedding.#Rv 19:8; 22:14 12So he said to him, ‘Friend,#Mt 20:13; 26:50 how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man was speechless.
13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him up hand and foot, # 22:13 Other mss add take him away and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.” #
Mt 20:16; Rv 17:14
God and Caesar
15Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to trap him by what he said.#22:15 Lit trap him in a word#Mk 12:13–17; Lk 20:20–26 16So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians.#Mk 2:8; 3:6; 8:15 “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are truthful and teach truthfully the way of God. You don’t care what anyone thinks nor do you show partiality.#22:16 Lit don’t look on the face of men#Jn 3:2; Ac 10:34; 13:10; 18:26 17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar#Mk 12:14,16–17; Lk 2:1; 3:1; 20:22,24–25; Jn 19:12,15 or not?”
18Perceiving their malicious intent, Jesus said, “Why are you testing me, hypocrites? 19Show me the coin used for the tax.” They brought him a denarius.#22:19 A denarius = one day’s wage 20“Whose image and inscription is this?” he asked them.
21“Caesar’s,” they said to him.
Then he said to them, “Give, then, to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”#Mt 17:25; Rm 13:7 22When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.
The Sadducees and the Resurrection
23That same day some Sadducees,#Mk 12:18–27; Lk 20:27–38 who say there is no resurrection, came up to him and questioned him:#Mt 3:7; Ac 4:1; 23:8 24“Teacher, Moses said, if a man dies, having no children, his brother is to marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.#22:24 Dt 25:5#Dt 25:5 25Now there were seven brothers among us. The first got married and died. Having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother. 26The same thing happened to the second also, and the third, and so on to all seven. 27Last of all, the woman died. 28In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had married her.”#22:28 Lit all had her
29Jesus answered them, “You are mistaken, because you don’t know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like#22:30 Other mss add God’s angels in heaven.#Mt 24:38; Lk 17:27 31Now concerning the resurrection of the dead, haven’t you read what was spoken to you by God: 32I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?#22:32 Ex 3:6,15–16#Ex 3:6; Ac 7:32 He#22:32 Other mss read God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
33And when the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
The Primary Commands
34When#Mk 12:28–33; Lk 10:25–28 the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they came together. 35And one of them, an expert in the law, asked a question to test him:#Lk 7:30; 10:25; 11:45; 14:3 36“Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?”
37He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.#22:37 Dt 6:5#Dt 6:5; Lk 10:27 38This is the greatest and most important#22:38 Lit and first command. 39The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.#22:39 Lv 19:18#Lv 19:18; Mt 19:19 40All the Law and the Prophets depend#22:40 Or hang on these two commands.”#Mt 7:12; Rm 13:8–10; Gl 5:14
The Question about the Messiah
41While the Pharisees were together, Jesus questioned them,#Mk 12:35–37; Lk 20:41–44 42“What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”
They replied, “David’s.”
43He asked them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit,#22:43 Lit David in Spirit calls him ‘Lord’:#2Sm 23:2; Rv 1:10; 4:2
44 The Lord declared to my Lord,
‘Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies under your feet’? # 22:44 Other mss read until I make your enemies your footstool’ # 22:44 Ps 110:1 #
Ps 110:1; Ac 2:34–35; 1Co 15:25; Heb 1:13; 10:13
45 “If David calls him ‘Lord,’ how, then, can he be his son?” 46No one was able to answer him at all,#22:46 Lit answer him a word and from that day no one dared to question him anymore.#Mk 12:34; Lk 14:6; 20:40

The Story of the Wedding Dinner
1Jesus told them more stories. He said, 2“Here is what the kingdom of heaven is like. A king prepared a wedding dinner for his son. 3He sent his slaves to those who had been invited to the dinner. The slaves told them to come. But they refused.
4“Then he sent some more slaves. He said, ‘Tell those who were invited that I have prepared my dinner. I have killed my oxen and my fattest cattle. Everything is ready. Come to the wedding dinner.’
5“But the people paid no attention. One went away to his field. Another went away to his business. 6The rest grabbed his slaves. They treated them badly and then killed them. 7The king became very angry. He sent his army to destroy them. They killed those murderers and burned their city.
8“Then the king said to his slaves, ‘The wedding dinner is ready. But those I invited were not fit to come. 9So go to the street corners. Invite to the dinner anyone you can find.’ 10So the slaves went out into the streets. They gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good. Soon the wedding hall was filled with guests.
11“The king came in to see the guests. He noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man couldn’t think of anything to say.
13“Then the king told his slaves, ‘Tie up his hands and feet. Throw him outside into the darkness. Out there people will weep and grind their teeth.’
14“Many are invited, but few are chosen.”
Is It Right to Pay the Royal Tax to Caesar?
15The Pharisees went out. They made plans to trap Jesus with his own words. 16They sent their followers to him. They sent the Herodians with them. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of honor. You teach the way of God truthfully. You don’t let others tell you what to do or say. You don’t care how important they are. 17Tell us then, what do you think? Is it right to pay the royal tax to Caesar or not?”
18But Jesus knew their evil plans. He said, “You pretenders! Why are you trying to trap me? 19Show me the coin people use for paying the tax.” They brought him a silver coin. 20He asked them, “Whose picture is this? And whose words?”
21“Caesar’s,” they replied.
Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. And give back to God what belongs to God.”
22When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.
Marriage When the Dead Rise
23That same day the Sadducees came to Jesus with a question. They do not believe that people rise from the dead. 24“Teacher,” they said, “here is what Moses told us. If a man dies without having children, his brother must get married to the widow. He must provide children to carry on his brother’s name. 25There were seven brothers among us. The first one got married and died. Since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26The same thing happened to the second and third brothers. It happened right on down to the seventh brother. 27Finally, the woman died. 28Now then, when the dead rise, whose wife will she be? All seven of them were married to her.”
29Jesus replied, “You are mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures. And you do not know the power of God. 30When the dead rise, they won’t get married. And their parents won’t give them to be married. They will be like the angels in heaven. 31What about the dead rising? Haven’t you read what God said to you? 32He said, ‘I am the God of Abraham. I am the God of Isaac. And I am the God of Jacob.’ (Exodus 3:6) He is not the God of the dead. He is the God of the living.”
33When the crowds heard this, they were amazed by what he taught.
The Most Important Commandment
34The Pharisees heard that the Sadducees weren’t able to answer Jesus. So the Pharisees got together. 35One of them was an authority on the law. So he tested Jesus with a question. 36“Teacher,” he asked, “which is the most important commandment in the Law?”
37Jesus replied, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your mind.’ (Deuteronomy 6:5) 38This is the first and most important commandment. 39And the second is like it. ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ (Leviticus 19:18) 40Everything that is written in the Law and the Prophets is based on these two commandments.”
Whose Son Is the Messiah?
41The Pharisees were gathered together. Jesus asked them, 42“What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”
“The son of David,” they replied.
43He said to them, “Then why does David call him ‘Lord’? The Holy Spirit spoke through David himself. David said,
44“ ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
under your control.” ’ (Psalm 110:1)
45So if David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be David’s son?” 46No one could give any answer to him. From that day on, no one dared to ask him any more questions.
