Israel’s Restoration
1While he was still confined in the guard’s courtyard,#Jr 32:2 the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time: 2“The Lord who made the earth,#33:2 LXX; MT reads made it the Lord who forms it to establish it,#Gn 2:18–19 the Lord is his name,#Ex 6:3 says this: 3Call to me and I will answer you#Ps 91:15; Jr 29:12 and tell you great and incomprehensible things you do not know.#Is 48:6 4For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the houses of this city and the palaces of Judah’s kings, the ones torn down for defense against the assault ramps and the sword:#Jr 32:24 5The people coming to fight the Chaldeans will fill the houses with the corpses of their own men that I strike down in my wrath and fury. I have hidden my face#Dt 31:17; 32:20; Is 54:8 from this city because of all their evil. 6Yet I will certainly bring health#Is 58:8; Jr 8:22; 30:17 and healing to it and will indeed heal them. I will let them experience the abundance#33:6 Or fragrance; Hb obscure of true peace.#2Kg 20:19; Est 9:30; Is 39:8 7I will restore the fortunes#33:7 Or will end the captivity, also in v. 11 of Judah and of Israel and will rebuild them as in former times.#Is 1:26 8I will purify them from all the iniquity they have committed against me,#Ps 51:2; Ezk 36:25; Heb 9:11–14 and I will forgive all the iniquities they have committed against me, rebelling against me. 9This city will bear on my behalf a name of joy, praise, and glory#Dt 26:19; Jr 13:11; Zph 3:19–20 before all the nations of the earth, who will hear of all the prosperity I will give them. They will tremble with awe because of all the good and all the peace#Jr 8:15; 14:19 I will bring about for them.
10“This is what the Lord says: In this place, which you say is a ruin,#Jr 32:43 without people or animals — that is, in Judah’s cities and Jerusalem’s streets that are a desolation without people, without inhabitants, and without animals — there will be heard again 11a sound of joy and gladness, the voice of the groom and the bride,#Jr 7:34; 16:9; 25:10 and the voice of those saying,
Give thanks to the Lord of Armies,
for the Lord is good;
his faithful love endures forever
as they bring thanksgiving sacrifices to the temple of the Lord. For I will restore the fortunes of the land as in former times, says the Lord.
12“This is what the Lord of Armies says: In this desolate place — without people or animals — and in all its cities there will once more be a grazing land where shepherds may rest flocks.#Is 65:10; Ezk 34:12–15 13The flocks will again pass under the hands of the one who counts them#Lv 27:32 in the cities of the hill country,#Jr 17:26 the cities of the Judean foothills, the cities of the Negev, the land of Benjamin — the areas around Jerusalem and in Judah’s cities, says the Lord.
God’s Covenant with David
14“Look, the days are coming” —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
“when I will fulfill the good promise
that I have spoken
concerning the house of Israel
and the house of Judah.#Jos 21:45; Jr 23:5–6
15In those days and at that time
I will cause a Righteous Branch#Is 4:2; Zch 3:8
to sprout up for David,
and he will administer justice
and righteousness in the land.
16In those days Judah will be saved,
and Jerusalem will dwell securely,#Dt 33:12
and this is what she will be named:
The Lord Is Our Righteousness.#33:16 = Yahweh-zidkenu
17“For this is what the Lord says: David will never fail to have a man sitting on the throne of the house of Israel.#1Kg 2:4; 8:25; 9:5 18The Levitical priests will never fail to have a man always before me to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices.”#Jr 31:36; 35:19
19The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 20“This is what the Lord says: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night so that day and night cease to come at their regular time,#Gn 8:22; Is 54:9–10; Jr 31:35–37 21then also my covenant with my servant David#2Sm 7:11–16; 2Ch 21:7; Ps 89:3 may be broken. If that could happen, then he would not have a son reigning on his throne and the Levitical priests would not be my ministers.#Is 61:6; Ezk 45:4–5; Jl 1:9,13 22Even as the stars of heaven cannot be counted, and the sand of the sea cannot be measured,#Gn 22:17 so too I will make innumerable the descendants of my servant David and the Levites who minister to me.”
23The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 24“Have you not noticed what these people have said? They say, ‘The Lord has rejected the two families he had chosen.’#Dt 7:6; 14:2 My people are treated with contempt and no longer regarded as a nation among them. 25This is what the Lord says: If I do not keep my covenant with the day and with the night, and if I fail to establish the fixed order of heaven and earth,#Ps 74:16–17 26then I might also reject the descendants of Jacob and of my servant David. That is, I would not take rulers from his descendants to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But in fact, I will restore their fortunes#33:26 Or I will end their captivity and have compassion on them.”#Jr 12:15; 30:18; 31:20; 33:7; 42:12

The Fortunes of Judah and Israel Will Be Restored
1And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah a second time while he was still held back in the courtyard of the guard, saying,#Literally “to say” 2“Thus says Yahweh who made the earth,#Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation Yahweh who formed it to establish it, Yahweh is his name: 3‘Call to me, and I will answer you, and I will tell you great things and inaccessible things that you have not known.’ 4For thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, that were torn down to make a defense against the siege ramps and against the sword: 5‘They are coming to fight against the Chaldeans, and to fill them with the corpses of the people whom I will strike in my anger and in my wrath, for whom I have hidden my face from this city because of all their wickedness. 6Look, I am going to bring healing and health to it, and I will heal them, and I will reveal to them abundance of peace and reliability. 7And I will restore the fortunes#Hebrew “fortune” of Judah and the fortunes#Hebrew “fortune” of Israel, and I will rebuild them as in the beginning. 8And I will cleanse them from all their guilt that they sinned against me, and I will forgive all their iniquities that they sinned against me, and that they rebelled against me. 9And it will be to me a name of jubilation, a praise, and a glory before all the nations of the earth, who will hear all the good that I will do for them, and they will fear,#Or “tremble” and they will tremble because of all the good, and because of all the prosperity that I will provide for it.’
10“Thus says Yahweh: ‘Again will be heard in this place, of which you are saying, “It is a waste, without#Literally “from there is not” people and without#Literally “from there is not” animals,”#Hebrew “animal” in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without#Literally “from there is not” people and without#Literally “from there is not” inhabitants#Hebrew “inhabitant” and without#Literally “from there is not” animals,#Hebrew “animal” 11the voice of jubilation, and the voice of joy, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voices#Hebrew “voice” of those who say, “Praise Yahweh of hosts, for Yahweh is good, for his loyal love is forever,”#Literally “to eternity” the voices of those who bring thank offerings#Hebrew “thank offering” to the house of Yahweh, for I will restore the fortunes#Hebrew “fortune” of the land as in the beginning,’ says Yahweh. 12Thus says Yahweh of hosts: ‘Again there will be in this waste place, without#Literally “from there is not” people and animals,#Hebrew “animal” and in all its towns, pasture for shepherds allowing their flock to lie down. 13In the towns of the hill country, in the towns of the Shephelah, and in the towns of the Negev, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the surroundings of Jerusalem, and in the towns of Judah, flocks will again pass under the hands of the counter,’ says Yahweh.
14‘Look, days are coming,’ declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh, ‘and I will fulfill the good promise#Or “word” that I promised to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. 15In those days and in that time I will make a branch of righteousness sprout for David, and he will execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell safely,#Literally “with confidence” and this is what they shall call it: “Yahweh is our righteousness.” ’ 17For thus says Yahweh: ‘A man who sits on the throne of the house of Israel will not be cut off for David. 18And for the priests, a man from the Levites who offers burnt offerings#Hebrew “burnt offering” and who burns grain offerings#Hebrew “grain offering” and who brings sacrifices#Hebrew “sacrifice” will not be cut off before me#Literally “to the face of me” forever.’ ”#Literally “all the days”
19And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, saying,#Literally “to say” 20“Thus says Yahweh: ‘If you could break my covenant with the day, and my covenant with the night, so that day and night would not come at their time, 21then my covenant could be broken with David my servant, from having#Literally “being for him” a son who could rule on his throne, and with the Levites, the priests, my ministers. 22As the host of heaven cannot be counted, and the sand of the sea cannot be measured, so I will make numerous the offspring of David my servant and the Levites who minister to me.’ ” 23And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, saying,#Literally “to say” 24“Have you not seen how these people speak, saying,#Literally “to say” ‘The two clans#Or “families” whom Yahweh chose, he has also rejected them’? Thus they spurn my people from being a nation before them#Literally “to the face of them” any longer. 25Thus says Yahweh: ‘If my covenant with day and with night, the regulations of heaven and earth, I had not established, 26then the offspring of Jacob and David my servant I would reject, from choosing rulers from his offspring over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for I will restore their fortunes#Hebrew “fortune” and I will have compassion on them.’ ”
