Reminder of the Covenant
1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2“Listen to the words of this covenant#Dt 29:9 and tell them to the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem. 3Tell them, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Let a curse be on the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,#Dt 27:26; Gl 3:10 4which I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt,#Dt 29:25; Jr 7:22; 34:13 out of the iron furnace.”#Dt 4:20; 1Kg 8:51 I declared, “Obey me, and do everything that I command you, and you will be my people, and I will be your God,”#Dt 29:13; Jr 24:7; 30:22 5in order to establish the oath I swore to your ancestors,#Gn 26:3; Dt 7:8 to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is today.’”
I answered, “Amen, Lord.”#Dt 27:15–16
6The Lord said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: ‘Obey the words of this covenant and carry them out.’ 7For I strongly warned your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt until today, warning them time and time again,#11:7 Lit today, rising early and warning#2Ch 36:15; Jr 7:13,25; 25:3; 26:5; 29:19; 32:33; 35:14–15; 44:4 ‘Obey me.’ 8Yet they would not obey or pay attention; each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart.#Jr 3:17; 7:24; 16:12 So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant, because they had not done what I commanded them to do.”
9The Lord said to me, “A conspiracy has been discovered among the men of Judah#Ezk 22:25; Hs 6:9 and the residents of Jerusalem. 10They have returned to the iniquities of their ancestors#Lv 26:39–40; Neh 9:2; Is 65:7 who refused to obey my words and have followed other gods to worship them.#Dt 28:14; Jr 13:10; 35:15 The house of Israel and the house of Judah broke my covenant I made with their ancestors.
11“Therefore, this is what the Lord says: I am about to bring on them disaster that they cannot escape.#Jr 39:4–7; Am 9:1–4 They will cry out to me, but I will not hear them. 12Then the cities of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods they have been burning incense to, but they certainly will not save them in their time of disaster.#Dt 32:35–37 13Your gods are indeed as numerous as your cities, Judah,#Jr 2:28 and the altars you have set up to Shame#11:13 = Baal#Jr 3:24; Hs 9:10 — altars to burn incense to Baal — as numerous as the streets of Jerusalem.
14“As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not raise up a cry or a prayer on their behalf,#Jr 7:16; 14:11 for I will not be listening when they call out to me at the time of their disaster.
15What right does my beloved have
to be in my house,#Jr 7:1–15
having carried out so many evil schemes?
Can holy meat#11:15 = sacrificial meat#Hg 2:12 prevent your disaster#11:15 LXX; MT reads meat pass from you
so you can celebrate?
16The Lord named you
a flourishing olive tree,#Ps 52:8; 128:3; Hs 14:6
beautiful with well-formed fruit.
He has set fire to it,
and its branches are consumed#11:16 Vg; MT reads broken#Ezk 31:12
with the sound of a mighty tumult.#Ezk 1:24
17“The Lord of Armies who planted you#Is 5:2,7; Jr 2:21 has decreed disaster against you, because of the disaster#11:17 Or evil the house of Israel and the house of Judah brought on themselves when they angered me by burning incense to Baal.”
18The Lord informed me, so I knew.
Then you helped me to see their deeds,
19for I was like a docile#11:19 Or pet lamb led to slaughter.#Ps 44:11,22; Is 53:7; Jr 12:3
I didn’t know that they had devised plots against me:
“Let’s destroy the tree with its fruit;#11:19 Lit bread
let’s cut him off from the land of the living#Ps 27:13; Is 53:8; Ezk 26:20
so that his name will no longer be remembered.”
20But, Lord of Armies, who judges righteously,
who tests#Jr 9:7; 12:3 heart#11:20 Lit kidneys and mind,#Ps 7:9; 17:3; 26:2
let me see your vengeance on them,
for I have presented my case to you.#Jr 20:12
21Therefore, here is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth#Jr 1:1; 32:7–9 who intend to take your life. They warn, “Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord,#Am 7:13 or you will certainly die at our hand.” 22Therefore, this is what the Lord of Armies says: “I am about to punish them. The young men will die by the sword; their sons and daughters will die by famine.#Am 7:16–17 23They will have no remnant, for I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth#Jr 23:12 in the year of their punishment.”

The Agreement Is Broken
1These are the words that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah: 2“Listen to the words of this agreement. Tell the people of Judah about it. Tell it to those living in Jerusalem. 3Tell them this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Trouble will come to anyone who does not obey this agreement. 4I am talking about the agreement I made with your ancestors. I made it with them when I brought them out of Egypt. Egypt was like a furnace for melting iron!’ I told them, ‘Obey me and do everything I command you. If you do this, you will be my people. And I will be your God. 5Then I will keep the promise I made to your ancestors. I promised to give them a land where much food grows.’ And you are living in that country today!”
I, Jeremiah, answered, “Amen, Lord.”
6The Lord said this to me: “Prophesy this message in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: ‘Listen to the words of this agreement. Then obey them! 7I warned your ancestors to obey me when I brought them out of Egypt. I have warned them again and again to this very day! 8But your ancestors did not listen to me. They were stubborn and did what their own evil hearts wanted. The agreement says curses will come upon them if they don’t obey it. So I made all those curses come upon them! I commanded them to obey the agreement, but they did not.’”
9Then the Lord said to me, “I know the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem have made secret plans. 10They are doing the same sins their ancestors did! Their ancestors refused to listen to my message. They followed and worshiped other gods. The families of Israel and Judah have broken the agreement I made with their ancestors. 11So this is what the Lord says: ‘I will soon bring a disaster on the people of Judah. They will not be able to escape! And they will cry to me for help. But I will not listen to them! 12The people living in the towns of Judah and the city of Jerusalem will pray to their idols for help. They will burn incense to their idols. But those idols will not be able to help when that terrible time comes! 13The people of Judah have as many idols as there are towns in Judah. They have built many altars for worshiping that shameful god Baal. There are as many altars as there are streets in Jerusalem!’
14“As for you, Jeremiah, don’t pray for these people. Don’t cry out for them or ask anything for them. I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their trouble.
15“What is my lover, Judah, doing in my Temple?
She makes many evil plans.
Does she think animal sacrifices will stop her punishment?
When you do your evil, then you are happy.”
16The Lord called you “a leafy olive tree,
with beautiful fruit to look at.”
But with a strong storm
the Lord will set that tree on fire.
And its branches will be burned up.
17The Lord of heaven’s armies planted you. And he has announced that disaster will come to you. This is because the families of Israel and Judah have done evil things. They have made him angry by offering sacrifices to Baal.
Evil Plans Against Jeremiah
18The Lord showed me that men were making plans against me. The Lord showed me what they were doing. So I knew they were against me. 19Before this, I was like a gentle lamb waiting to be butchered. I did not know they had made plans against me. They said:
“Let us destroy the tree and its fruit!
Let’s kill him!
Then people will forget him!”
20But, Lord of heaven’s armies, you are a fair judge.
You know how to test peoples’ hearts and minds.
I will tell you what I have against them.
And I will let you give them the punishment they should have!
21So the Lord speaks about the men from Anathoth who were planning to kill Jeremiah. Those men say, “Don’t prophesy in the name of the Lord. If you do, we will kill you!” 22So this is what the Lord of heaven’s armies says: “I will soon punish the men from Anathoth. Their young men will die in war. Their sons and daughters will die from hunger. 23No one from the city of Anathoth will be left alive. I will cause a disaster to happen to them that year.”
