The Death of Saul and His Sons
1The Philistines fought against Israel,#2Sm 1:12; 1Ch 10:1–12 and Israel’s men fled from them and were killed on Mount Gilboa.#1Sm 28:4 2The Philistines pursued Saul and his sons and killed his sons, Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua. 3When the battle intensified against Saul,#2Sm 1:6 the archers found him and severely wounded him.#31:3 LXX reads and he was wounded under the ribs 4Then Saul said to his armor-bearer,#Jdg 9:54 “Draw your sword and run me through with it, or these uncircumcised men#Jdg 14:3 will come and run me through and torture me!” But his armor-bearer would not do it because he was terrified. Then Saul took his sword and fell on it.#2Sm 1:6,10 5When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his own sword and died with him. 6So on that day, Saul died together with his three sons, his armor-bearer, and all his men.
7When the men of Israel on the other side of the valley and on the other side of the Jordan saw that Israel’s men had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled. So the Philistines came and settled in them.
8The next day when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons dead on Mount Gilboa. 9They cut off Saul’s head, stripped off his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to spread the good news#2Sm 1:20 in the temples of their idols#Jdg 16:23–24 and among the people. 10Then they put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths#Jdg 2:13; 1Sm 7:3 and hung his body#1Sm 31:12; 2Sm 21:14 on the wall of Beth-shan.#Jos 17:11
11When the residents of Jabesh-gilead#1Sm 11:1–13 heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all their brave men#2Sm 2:4–7 set out, journeyed all night, and retrieved the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan. When they arrived at Jabesh, they burned the bodies there.#2Ch 16:14 13Afterward, they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree#1Sm 22:6 in Jabesh#2Sm 2:4–7; 21:12–14 and fasted seven days.

1 Kings 31
31
1And the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gelboe.
2And the Philistines fell upon Saul, and upon his sons: and they slew Jonathan, and Abinadab and Melchisua the sons of Saul.
3And the whole weight of the battle was turned upon Saul: and the archers overtook him. And he was grievously wounded by the archers.
4Then Saul said to his armourbearer: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest these uncircumcised come, and slay me, and mock at me. And his armourbearer would not: for he was struck with exceeding great fear. Then Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.
5And when his armourbearer saw this, to wit, that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him.
6So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men that same day together.
7And the men of Israel, that were beyond the valley, and beyond the Jordan, seeing that the Israelites were fled, and that Saul was dead, and his sons, forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came, and dwelt there.
8And on the morrow the Philistines came to strip the slain: and they found Saul and his three sons lying in mount Gelboe.
9And they cut off Saul's head, and stripped him of his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the temples of their idols, and among their people.
10And they put his armour in the temple of Astaroth: but his body they hung on the wall of Bethsan.
11Now when the inhabitants of Jabes Galaad had heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12All the most valiant men arose, and walked all the night, and took the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Bethsan. And they came to Jabes Galaad, and burnt them there.
13And they took their bones and buried them in the wood of Jabes: and fasted seven days.
