Job 40

Job: What Can I Say?
1Then the Lord said to Job,
2“Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty?
Let him who disputes with God answer it.”
3Then Job replied to the Lord and said,
4“Behold, I am of little importance and contemptible; what can I reply to You?
I lay my hand on my mouth.
5I have spoken once, but I will not reply again—
Indeed, twice [I have answered], and I will add nothing further.”
God Questions Job
6Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, saying,
7“Now #See note 38:3.gird up your loins (prepare yourself) like a man,
And I will ask you, and you instruct Me.
8Will you really annul My judgment and set it aside as void?
Will you condemn Me [your God] that you may [appear to] be righteous and justified?
9Have you an arm like God,
And can you thunder with a voice like His?
10“Adorn yourself with eminence and dignity [since you question the Almighty],
And array yourself with honor and majesty.
11Pour out the overflowings of your wrath,
And look at everyone who is proud and make him low.
12Look at everyone who is proud, and humble him,
And [if you are so able] tread down the wicked where they stand.
13[Crush and] hide them in the dust together;
Shut them up in the hidden place [the house of death].
14[If you can do all this, Job, proving your divine power] then I [God] will also praise you and acknowledge
That your own right hand can save you.
God’s Power Shown in Creatures
15“Behold now, #Or the hippopotamus. Although Behemoth cannot be identified with certainty, the biblical description seems most like the hippopotamus. In ancient times it may have been even more formidable than today. In Job’s day the hippopotamus was the largest known creature, was commonly found in the lower Nile River, and may also have existed in the Jordan.Behemoth, which I created as well as you;
He eats grass like an ox.
16See now, his strength is in his loins
And his power is in the muscles and sinews of his belly.
17He sways his tail like a cedar;
The tendons of his thighs are twisted and knit together [like a rope].
18His bones are tubes of bronze;
His #Lit bones.limbs are like bars of iron.
19“He is the first [in magnitude and power] of the works of God;
[Only] He who made him can bring near His sword [to master him].
20Surely the mountains bring him food,
And all the wild animals play there.
21He lies down under the lotus plants,
In the hidden shelter of the reeds in the marsh.
22The lotus plants cover him with their shade;
The willows of the brook surround him.
23If a river rages and overflows, he does not tremble;
He is confident, though the Jordan [River] swells and rushes against his mouth.
24Can anyone capture him when he is on watch,
Or pierce his nose with barbs [to trap him]?

Iyov (Job) 40
40
1Continuing to address Iyov, Adonai said:
2“Does the critic still want to dispute Shaddai?
Let him who wants to correct God give an answer!”
3Then Iyov replied to Adonai:
4“I am too ashamed; I have nothing to say.
I lay my hand over my mouth.
5Yes, I spoke once, but I won’t answer more;
all right, twice, but I won’t go on.”
6Adonai answered Iyov out of the storm:
7“Stand up like a man, and brace yourself;
I will ask questions; and you, give the answers!
8“Are you impugning my justice?
Putting me in the wrong to prove yourself right?
9Do you have an arm like God’s?
Can you thunder with a voice like his?
10Come on, deck yourself with majesty and dignity,
robe yourself in glory and splendor.
11Let loose your furious anger,
look at all who are proud, and humble them.
12Look at all who are proud, and bring them down;
tread down the wicked where they stand.
13Bury them in the ground together,
bind their faces in the hidden world.
14If you do this, then I will confess to you
that your own power can save you.
15“Now consider Behemot, whom I made along with you.
He eats grass like an ox.
16What strength he has in his loins!
What power in his stomach muscles!
17He can make his tail as stiff as a cedar,
the muscles in his thighs are like cables,
18his bones are like bronze pipes,
his limbs like iron bars.
19“He ranks first among God’s works.
Only his maker can approach him with his sword.
20The mountains produce food for him there,
where all the wild animals play.
21He lies down under the thorny lotus bushes
and is hidden by the reeds in the swamp;
22the lotus bushes cover him with their shade,
and the willows by the stream surround him.
23If the river overflows, it doesn’t worry him;
he is confident even if the Yarden rushes by his mouth.
24Can anyone catch him by his eyes
or pierce his nose with a hook?
25“And Livyatan! Can you catch him with a fishhook
or hold his tongue down with a rope?
26Can you put a ring in his nose
or pierce his jaw with a barb?
27Will he entreat you at length?
Will he speak with you softly?
28Will he agree with you
to be your slave forever?
29Will you play with him as you would with a bird
or keep him on a string to amuse your little girls?
30Will a group of fishermen turn him into a banquet?
Will they divide him among the merchants?
31Can you fill his skin with darts
or his head with fish-spears?
32If you lay your hand on him,
you won’t forget the fight, and you’ll never do it again!
