The Prophetic Call to Samuel
1Now the boy Samuel was attending to the service of the Lord #Lit before.under the supervision of Eli. The word of the Lord was rare and precious in those days; visions [that is, new revelations of divine truth] were not widespread.
2Yet it happened at that time, as Eli was lying down in his own place (now his eyesight had begun to grow dim and he could not see well). 3and the [oil] lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, 4that the Lord called Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.” 5He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call you; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6Then the Lord called yet again, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But Eli answered, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” 7Now Samuel did not yet know [or personally experience] the Lord, and the word of the Lord was not yet revealed [directly] to him. 8So the Lord called Samuel a third time. And he stood and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you did call me.” Then Eli understood that it was the Lord [who was] calling the boy. 9So Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and it shall be that if He calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10Then the Lord came and stood and called as at the previous times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” 11The Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will ring. 12On that day I will carry out against Eli everything that I have spoken concerning his house (family), from beginning to end. 13Now I have told him that I am about to judge his house forever for the sinful behavior which he knew [was happening], because his sons were bringing a curse on themselves [dishonoring and blaspheming God] and he did not rebuke them. 14Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the sinful behavior of Eli’s house (family) shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”
15So Samuel lay down until morning. Then he opened the doors of the Lord’s house. But Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he answered, “Here I am.” 17Then Eli said, “What is it that He said to you? Please do not hide it from me. May God do the same to you, and more also, if you hide from me anything of all that He said to you.” 18So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. And Eli said, “It is the Lord; may He do what seems good #Lit in His eyes.to Him.”
19Now Samuel grew; and the Lord was with him and He let none of his words #Lit fall to the ground.fail [to be fulfilled]. 20And all Israel from Dan [in the north] to Beersheba [in the south] knew that Samuel was appointed as a prophet of the Lord. 21And the Lord continued to appear in Shiloh, for the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord.

1 Samuel 3
1¶ And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
2And it came to pass one day when Eli was lain down in his place, his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;
3and before the lamp of God was put out, Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was;
4and the Lord called Samuel, and he answered, Here am I.
5And he ran unto Eli and said, Here am I, for thou didst call me. And he said, I did not call; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
6And the Lord called Samuel yet again. And Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, Here am I, for thou didst call me. And he answered, I did not call, my son; lie down again.
7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither had the word of the Lord yet been revealed unto him.
8And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, Here am I, for thou didst call me. Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the child.
9Therefore, Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down, and it shall be if he calls thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord, for thy slave hears. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10And the Lord came and stood and called as at the other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy slave hears.
11¶ And the Lord said unto Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of each one that hears it shall tingle.
12In that day I will perform against Eli all the things which I have spoken concerning his house; when I begin, I will also make an end.
13For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knows of (because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them).
14And therefore, I have sworn unto the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be reconciled, not with sacrifices nor with presents for ever.
15And Samuel lay until the morning and opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel feared to show Eli the vision.
16Then Eli called Samuel and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.
17And he said, What is the word that the Lord has spoken unto thee? I pray thee do not hide it from me. God do so to thee and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the word that he spoke unto thee.
18And Samuel declared all of it to him without hiding any thing. Then he said, It is the Lord; let him do what seems good unto him.
19¶ And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and did not let any of his words fall to the ground.
20And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was a faithful prophet of the Lord.
21Thus the Lord appeared again in Shiloh, for the Lord manifested himself to Samuel in Shiloh with the word of the Lord.
