Psalms 57

A Prayer in Troubled Times
For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A miktam of David when he escaped from Saul in a cave.
1Be merciful to me, God. Be merciful to me
because I come to you for protection.
I will come to you as a bird comes for protection under its mother’s wings
until the trouble has passed.
2I cry out to God Most High,
to the God who does everything for me.
3He sends help from heaven and saves me.
He punishes those who attack me. Selah
God sends me his love and truth.
4Enemies are like lions all around me.
I must lie down among them.
Their teeth are like spears and arrows.
Their tongues are as sharp as swords.
5God is supreme over the skies.
His greatness covers the earth.
6They set a trap for me.
I am very worried.
They dug a pit in my path.
But they fell into it themselves. Selah
7My heart is right, God. My heart is right.
I will sing and praise you.
8Wake up, my soul.
Wake up, harp and lyre!
I will wake up the dawn.
9Lord, I will praise you among the nations.
I will sing songs of praise about you to all the nations.
10Your love is so great it reaches to the skies.
Your truth reaches to the clouds.
11God, you are supreme over the skies.
Let your glory be over all the earth.

Psalm 57
For the choir director; al tashcheth; #57:0 Unknown musical term. a miktam by David when he fled from Saul into the cave.
1Have pity on me, O God. Have pity on me,
because my soul takes refuge in you.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until destructive storms pass by.
2I call to God Most High,
to the God who does everything for me.
3He sends his help from heaven and saves me.
He disgraces the one who is harassing me. Selah
God sends his mercy and his truth!
4My soul is surrounded by lions.
I must lie down with man-eating lions.
Their teeth are spears and arrows.
Their tongues are sharp swords.
5May you be honored above the heavens, O God.
Let your glory extend over the whole earth.
6 ⌞My enemies⌟ spread out a net to catch me.
(My soul is bowed down.)
They dug a pit to trap me,
but then they fell into it. Selah
7My heart is confident, O God.
My heart is confident.
I want to sing and make music.#57:7 Verses 7–11 are virtually identical in wording to Psalm 108:1–5.
8Wake up, my soul! #57:8 Or “my glory.”
Wake up, harp and lyre!
I want to wake up at dawn.
9I want to give thanks to you among the people, O Lord.
I want to make music to praise you among the nations
10because your mercy is as high as the heavens.
Your truth reaches the skies.
11May you be honored above the heavens, O God.
Let your glory extend over the whole earth.
