Psalms 5

A Morning Prayer for Protection
For the director of music. For flutes. A song of David.
1Lord, listen to my words.
Understand what I am thinking.
2Listen to my cry for help.
My king and my God, I pray to you.
3Lord, every morning you hear my voice.
Every morning, I tell you what I need.
And I wait for your answer.
4You are not a God who is pleased with what is wicked.
You do not live with those who do evil.
5Those people who make fun of you cannot stand before you.
You hate all those who do wrong.
6You destroy liars.
The Lord hates those who kill and trick others.
7Because of your great love,
I can come into your Temple.
Because I fear and respect you,
I can worship in your holy Temple.
8Lord, since I have many enemies,
show me the right thing to do.
Show me clearly how you want me to live.
9With their mouths my enemies do not tell the truth.
In their hearts they want to destroy people.
Their throats are like open graves.
They use their tongues for telling lies.
10God, declare them guilty!
Let them fall into their own traps.
Send them away because their sins are many.
They have turned against you.
11But let everyone who trusts you be happy.
Let them sing glad songs forever.
Protect those who love you.
They are happy because of you.
12Lord, you bless those who do what is right.
You protect them like a soldier’s shield.

Lead Me in Your Righteousness
To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David.
1Give ear to my words, O Lord;
consider my #[Ps. 39:3]groaning.
2Give attention to the sound of my cry,
my #Ps. 84:3 King and my God,
for #Ps. 65:2to you do I pray.
3O Lord, in #Ps. 88:13; 119:147; 130:6 the morning you hear my voice;
in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you#5:3 Or I direct my prayer to you and #[Hab. 2:1]watch.
4For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil may not dwell with you.
5The #Ps. 73:3; 75:4; [Hab. 1:13] boastful shall not #See Ps. 1:5 stand before your eyes;
you #Ps. 11:5hate all evildoers.
6You destroy those who speak #[Ps. 4:2]; Rev. 21:8; 22:15 lies;
the Lord abhors #Ps. 55:23the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
7But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house.
I will #Ps. 132:7 bow down #1 Kgs. 8:29, 30 toward your #Ps. 11:4; 79:1holy temple
in the fear of you.
8 # [Ps. 23:3; 25:4, 5] Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
# [Ezra 8:21] make your way straight before me.
9For there is no truth in their mouth;
their inmost self is #Ps. 52:2 destruction;
# Cited Rom. 3:13 their throat is #Jer. 5:16 an open grave;
they #Ps. 12:2; Prov. 2:16; 7:5flatter with their tongue.
10 # [Isa. 24:6] Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them #[2 Sam. 15:31; 17:14, 23]fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.
11But let all who #Ps. 2:12 take refuge in you #Ps. 33:21 rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may #[Ps. 9:2; 1 Sam. 2:1]exult in you.
12For you #Ps. 115:13 bless the righteous, O Lord;
you #[Ps. 103:4] cover him with favor as with #[Ps. 35:2]a shield.
