The Acts 14
14
Paul and Barnabas in Iconium
1In Iconium, Paul and Barnabas went as usual to the Jewish synagogue. They spoke so well that a great many Jews and Greeks believed. 2But some of the Jews who did not believe excited the non-Jewish people and turned them against the believers. 3But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Iconium a long time and spoke bravely for the Lord. The Lord showed that their message about his grace was true by giving them the power to work miracles and signs. 4But some of the people in the city agreed with the Jews. Others believed the apostles. So the city was divided.
5Some non-Jewish people, some Jews, and some of their rulers wanted to harm Paul and Barnabas by killing them with stones. 6When Paul and Barnabas learned about this, they went to Lystra and Derbe, cities in Lycaonia, and to the areas around those cities. 7They announced the Good News there, too.
Paul in Lystra and Derbe
8In Lystra there sat a man who had been born crippled; he had never walked. 9This man was listening to Paul speak. Paul looked straight at him and saw that the man believed God could heal him. 10So he cried out, “Stand up on your feet!” The man jumped up and began walking around. 11When the crowds saw what Paul did, they shouted in their own Lycaonian language. They said, “The gods have become like men! They have come down to us!” 12And the people began to call Barnabas “Zeus.”# The Greeks believed in many gods. Zeus was their most important god. They called Paul “Hermes,”# The Greeks believed he was a messenger for the other gods. because he was the main speaker. 13The temple of Zeus was near the city. The priest of this temple brought some bulls and flowers to the city gates. The priest and the people wanted to offer a sacrifice to Paul and Barnabas. 14But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, understood what they were about to do, they tore their clothes in anger. Then they ran in among the people and shouted, 15“Men, why are you doing these things? We are only men, human beings like you! We are bringing you the Good News. We are telling you to turn away from these worthless things and turn to the true living God. He is the One who made the sky, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them. 16In the past, God let all the nations do what they wanted. 17Yet he did things to prove he is real: He shows kindness to you. He gives you rain from heaven and crops at the right times. He gives you food and fills your hearts with joy.” 18Even with these words, they were barely able to keep the crowd from offering sacrifices to them.
19Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium. They persuaded the people to turn against Paul. And so they threw stones at Paul and dragged him out of town. They thought that they had killed him. 20But the followers gathered around him, and he got up and went back into the town. The next day, he and Barnabas left and went to the city of Derbe.
The Return to Antioch in Syria
21Paul and Barnabas told the Good News in Derbe and many became followers. Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch. 22In those cities they made the followers of Jesus stronger. They helped them to stay in the faith. They said, “We must suffer many things to enter God’s kingdom.” 23They chose elders for each church, by praying and giving up eating.# This is called “fasting.” The people would give up eating for a special time of prayer and worship to God. It was also done to show sadness. These elders were men who had trusted the Lord. So Paul and Barnabas put them in the Lord’s care.
24Then they went through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia. 25They preached the message in Perga, and then they went down to Attalia. 26And from there they sailed away to Antioch. This is where the believers had put them into God’s care and had sent them out to do this work. And now they had finished the work.
27When they arrived in Antioch, they gathered the church together. Paul and Barnabas told them all about what God had done with them. They told how God had made it possible for the non-Jews to believe! 28And they stayed there a long time with the followers.

Acts 14
14
Paul and Barnabas at Iconium
1And it came to pass in Ico´ni-um, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed. 2But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren. 3Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands. 4But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles. 5And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them, 6they were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lyca-o´nia, and unto the region that lieth round about: 7and there they preached the gospel.
Paul Stoned at Lystra
8And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked: 9the same heard Paul speak: who steadfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, 10said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked. 11And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lyca-o´nia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men. 12And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercu´ri-us, because he was the chief speaker. 13Then the priest of Jupiter, which was#14.13 which was or whose temple was. before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people. 14Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, 15and saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: 16who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. 17Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. 18And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.
19And there came thither certain Jews from An´ti-och and Ico´ni-um, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead. 20Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe. 21And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Ico´ni-um, and An´ti-och, 22confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. 23And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.
The Return to Antioch in Syria
24And after they had passed throughout Pisid´i-a, they came to Pamphyl´i-a. 25And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attali´a: 26and thence sailed to An´ti-och, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled. 27And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. 28And there they abode long time with the disciples.
