Parashah 34: B’midbar (In the desert) 1:1–4:20
1Adonai spoke to Moshe in the Sinai Desert, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month of the second year after they had left the land of Egypt. He said, 2“Take a census of the entire assembly of the people of Isra’el, by clans and families. Record the names of all the men 3twenty years old and over who are subject to military service in Isra’el. You and Aharon are to enumerate them company by company.
4Take with you from each tribe someone who is head of a clan. 5These are the men to take with you:
From Re’uven, Elitzur the son of Sh’de’ur;
6From Shim‘on, Shlumi’el the son of Tzurishaddai;
7From Y’hudah, Nachshon the son of ‘Amminadav;
8From Yissakhar, N’tan’el the son of Tzu‘ar;
9From Z’vulun, Eli’av the son of Helon.
10Of the children of Yosef:
From Efrayim, Elishama the son of ‘Ammihud;
From M’nasheh, Gamli’el the son of P’dahtzur.
11From Binyamin, Avidan the son of Gid‘oni;
12From Dan, Achi‘ezer the son of ‘Ammishaddai;
13From Asher, Pag‘i’el the son of ‘Okhran;
14From Gad, Elyasaf the son of De‘u’el;
15From Naftali, Achira the son of ‘Enan.”
16These were the ones called from the assembly, the chiefs of their fathers’ clans and heads of thousands in Isra’el. 17So Moshe and Aharon took these men who had been designated by name; 18and, on the first day of the second month, they gathered the whole assembly to state their genealogies by families and clans and recorded the names of all those twenty years old and over, as well as their total numbers. 19Moshe counted them in the Sinai Desert, just as Adonai had ordered him.
(ii) 20The men twenty years old and over who were subject to military service were recorded by name, family and clan, starting with the descendants of Re’uven, Isra’el’s firstborn. Here are the totals:
44Moshe, Aharon and the twelve leaders of Isra’el, each from a clan, 45counted the people of Isra’el by their clans, those twenty years old and over, eligible for military service in Isra’el; 46and the grand total came to 603,550.
47But those who were L’vi’im, according to the clan of their fathers, were not counted in this census; 48because Adonai had told Moshe, 49“Do not include the clan of Levi when you take the census of the people of Isra’el. 50Instead, give the L’vi’im charge over the tabernacle of the testimony, its equipment and everything else connected with it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its equipment, serve in it and set up their camp around it. 51When the tabernacle is to be moved onward, it is the L’vi’im who are to take it down and set it up in the new location; anyone else who involves himself is to be put to death. 52The rest of Isra’el are to set up camp, company by company, each man with his own banner. 53But the L’vi’im are to camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that no anger will come upon the assembly of the people of Isra’el. The L’vi’im are to be in charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.”
54This is what the people of Isra’el did — they did everything that Adonai had ordered Moshe.

The People of Israel Are Counted
1The Lord spoke to Moses in the Meeting Tent. This was in the Desert of Sinai. It was on the first day of the second month. This was in the second year after the people of Israel left Egypt. The Lord said to Moses: 2“Count all the people of Israel. List the name of each man with his family and family group. 3You and Aaron must count all the men of Israel 20 years old or older. They will serve in the army of Israel. List them by their divisions. 4One man from each tribe will help you. He is to be the leader of his family. 5These are the names of the men who will help you:
from the tribe of Reuben—Elizur son of Shedeur;
6from the tribe of Simeon—Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;
7from the tribe of Judah—Nahshon son of Amminadab;
8from the tribe of Issachar—Nethanel son of Zuar;
9from the tribe of Zebulun—Eliab son of Helon;
10from the tribe of Ephraim son of Joseph—Elishama son of Ammihud;
from the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph—Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;
11from the tribe of Benjamin—Abidan son of Gideoni;
12from the tribe of Dan—Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;
13from the tribe of Asher—Pagiel son of Ocran;
14from the tribe of Gad—Eliasaph son of Deuel;
15from the tribe of Naphtali—Ahira son of Enan.”
16All these men were chosen by the people to be leaders of their tribes. They were the leaders of their family groups.
17Moses and Aaron took these men who had been picked. 18And Moses and Aaron called all the people of Israel together. This was the first day of the second month. Then the people were listed by their families and family groups. All the men who were 20 years old or older were listed by name. 19Moses did exactly what the Lord had commanded. Moses listed the people while they were in the Desert of Sinai.
20The tribe of Reuben was counted. Reuben was the first son born to Israel. All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were each listed by name with their families and family groups. 21The tribe of Reuben totaled 46,500 men.
22The tribe of Simeon was counted. All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were each listed by name with their families and family groups. 23The tribe of Simeon totaled 59,300 men.
24The tribe of Gad was counted. All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed by name with their families and family groups. 25The tribe of Gad totaled 45,650 men.
26The tribe of Judah was counted. All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed by name with their families and family groups. 27The tribe of Judah totaled 74,600 men.
28The tribe of Issachar was counted. All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed by name with their families and family groups. 29The tribe of Issachar totaled 54,400 men.
30The tribe of Zebulun was counted. All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed by name with their families and family groups. 31The tribe of Zebulun totaled 57,400 men.
32The tribe of Ephraim was counted. (Ephraim was a son of Joseph.) All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed by name with their families and family groups. 33The tribe of Ephraim totaled 40,500 men.
34The tribe of Manasseh was counted. (Manasseh was also a son of Joseph.) All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed by name with their families and family groups. 35The tribe of Manasseh totaled 32,200 men.
36The tribe of Benjamin was counted. All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed by name with their families and family groups. 37The tribe of Benjamin totaled 35,400 men.
38The tribe of Dan was counted. All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed by name with their families and family groups. 39The tribe of Dan totaled 62,700 men.
40The tribe of Asher was counted. All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed by name with their families and family groups. 41The tribe of Asher totaled 41,500 men.
42The tribe of Naphtali was counted. All the men 20 years old or older who were able to serve in the army were listed. They were listed by name with their families and family groups. 43The tribe of Naphtali totaled 53,400 men.
44Moses, Aaron and the 12 leaders of Israel counted these men. There was 1 leader from each of the families. 45Every man of Israel 20 years old or older who was able to serve in the army was counted. Each man was listed with his family. 46The total number of men was 603,550.
47The families from the tribe of Levi were not listed with the others. 48The Lord had told Moses: 49“Do not count the tribe of Levi or include them with the other Israelites. 50But make the Levites responsible for the Holy Tent of the Agreement. They must take care of it and everything that is with it. They must carry the Holy Tent and everything in it. They must take care of it and make their camp around it. 51Any time the Holy Tent is moved, the Levites must take it down. Any time it is set up, the Levites must do it. If anyone else goes near the Holy Tent, he will be put to death. 52The Israelites will make their camps in separate divisions, each man near his family flag. 53But the Levites must make their camp around the Holy Tent of the Agreement. Then I will not be angry with the Israelites. The Levites will take care of the Holy Tent of the Agreement.”
54So the Israelites did everything the Lord commanded Moses.
