Jacob 4
4
1 Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members? 2You lust, and don’t have. You murder and covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. You don’t have, because you don’t ask. 3You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4You adulterers and adulteresses, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously”? 6But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”#Proverbs 3:34 7Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
11Don’t speak against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother and judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12Only one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge another?
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.” 14Yet you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.” 16But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil. 17To him therefore who knows to do good and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.

James 4

Proud or Humble
1What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don’t they come from the cravings # Rm 7:23; Ti 3:9 that are at war within you? # Lit war in your members 2You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. You do not have because you do not ask. 3You ask and don’t receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your evil desires. # Ps 18:41; 1Jn 3:22; 5:14
4Adulteresses! # Other mss read Adulterers and adulteresses # Or Unfaithful people! Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the world’s friend becomes God’s enemy. # Jn 15:19; Jms 1:27; 1Jn 2:15 5Or do you think it’s without reason the Scripture says that the Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously? # Or He who caused the Spirit to live in us yearns jealously, or the spirit He caused to live in us yearns jealously, or He jealously yearns for the Spirit He made to live in us # 1Co 6:19; 2Co 6:16
6But He gives greater grace. Therefore He says:
God resists the proud,
but gives grace to the humble. # Ps 138:6; Pr 3:34; Mt 23:12 # Pr 3:34
7Therefore, submit to God. But resist the Devil, and he will flee from you. # Eph 4:27; 6:11; 1Pt 5:8-9 8Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, double-minded people! # 2Ch 15:2; Is 1:16; Jms 1:8 9Be miserable and mourn and weep. Your laughter must change to mourning and your joy to sorrow. # Mt 5:4; Lk 6:25 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.
11Don’t criticize one another, brothers. He who criticizes a brother or judges his brother criticizes the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. # Mt 7:1; Jms 1:22; 1Pt 2:1 12There is one lawgiver and judge # Other mss omit and judge who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? # Mt 10:28; Rm 14:4
Our Will and His Will
13Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” # Pr 27:1; Lk 12:18-20 14You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring — what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes. # Jb 7:7; Ps 102:3
15Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. # Ac 18:21; 1Co 5:6 17So it is a sin for the person who knows to do what is good and doesn’t do it. # Lk 12:47-48; Jn 9:41; 2Pt 2:21
