The Plot to Kill Jesus
Mt 26:1–5, 14–16; Mk 14:1–2, 10–11; Jn 11:45–53
1#Mk 14:1–2; Ex 12:6–23Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, drew near. 2And the chief priests and scribes were seeking how to kill Jesus, for they feared the people. 3#Jn 13:2; Mk 14:10–11Then Satan entered into Judas, called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve. 4#Ac 4:1; 5:24He went and discussed with the chief priests and captains how he might betray Him to them. 5They were glad and agreed to give him money. 6He fully consented and searched for an opportunity to betray Him to them apart from the crowds.
The Preparation of the Passover
Mt 26:17–25; Mk 14:12–21; Jn 13:21–30
7#Ex 12:18Then the Day of Unleavened Bread came, when the Passover lamb must be killed. 8He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us to eat it.”
9They said to Him, “Where will You have us prepare it?”
10He said to them, “Now, as you enter the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you there. Follow him into the house which he enters, 11#Jn 11:28and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12#Ac 1:13He will show you a large furnished upper room. Prepare there.”
13They went and found it as He had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
The Lord’s Supper
Mt 26:26–30; Mk 14:22–26; 1Co 11:23–25
14#Mt 26:20; Mk 14:17When the hour had come, He and the twelve apostles with Him sat down. 15And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16#Lk 14:15; Rev 19:9For I tell you, I will never eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17And He took the cup and gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves. 18#Mt 26:29; Mk 14:25For I tell you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19#1Co 10:16; Mt 26:26–28Then He took the bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”
20#Ex 24:8; Zec 9:11In like manner, He took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood which is shed for you. 21#Ps 41:9; Jn 13:26But see the hand of him who betrays Me is with Me at the table. 22#Ac 2:23Indeed, the Son of Man goes as it has been determined. But woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23They began to inquire among themselves which of them it was who would do this.
The Dispute About Greatness
24#Mk 9:34; Lk 9:46There was also rivalry among them concerning which of them was to be counted the greatest. 25#Mt 20:25–28He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. 26#Lk 9:48But you are not so. Instead, let him who is greatest among you be as the younger, and he who rules as he who serves. 27#Mt 20:28; Lk 12:37For who is greater: he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? But I am among you as He who serves. 28#Heb 2:18; 4:15You are those who have continued with Me in My trials. 29#2Ti 2:12; Mt 25:34And I appoint to you a kingdom as My Father has appointed one to Me, 30#Mt 19:28; Lk 14:15so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Peter’s Denial Foretold
31#Am 9:9; Job 1:6–12Then the Lord said, “Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to have you to sift you as wheat. 32#Jn 21:15–17; Ro 8:34But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have repented, strengthen your brothers.”
33#Mt 26:33–35; Mk 14:29He said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You to prison and to death.”
34#Mt 26:34; Mk 14:30He said, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know Me.”
Purse, Bag, and Sword
35#Lk 9:3; Mt 10:9–10Then He said to them, “When I sent you without purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”
They said, “Nothing.”
36He said to them, “But now, let him who has a purse take it and also a bag. And let him who has no sword sell his garment and buy one. 37#Isa 53:12For I tell you, what is written must yet be accomplished in Me, ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’#Isa 53:12. Indeed, what is written concerning Me has a fulfillment.”
38They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”
He said to them, “It is enough.”
The Prayer on the Mount of Olives
Mt 26:36–46; Mk 14:32–42
39#Lk 21:37; Mt 21:1According to His custom, He came out and went to the Mount of Olives. And His disciples followed Him. 40#Mt 6:13; Lk 22:46When He came there, He said to them, “Pray that you may not fall into temptation.” 41#Mt 26:39; Mk 14:35He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42#Mt 20:22“Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me. Nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43#Mt 4:11; 1Ti 3:16An angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44#La 1:12; Heb 5:7And being in anguish, He prayed more earnestly. And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45When He rose from prayer and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46#Lk 22:40He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you fall into temptation.”
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
Mt 26:47–56; Mk 14:43–50; Jn 18:3–11
47While He was yet speaking, a crowd came. And he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48But Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49#Lk 22:38When those who were around Him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51But Jesus said, “This is enough!” And He touched his ear and healed him.
52#Lk 22:4Then Jesus said to the chief priests, and captains of the temple guard, and the elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as against a rebel? 53#Jn 12:27; Ac 26:18Daily, while I was with you in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness!”
Peter’s Denial of Jesus
Mt 26:57–58, 69–75; Mk 14:53–54, 66–72; Jn18:12–18, 25–27
54#Mt 26:57–58; Mk 14:53–54Then they arrested Him, and led Him away, and brought Him into the high priest’s house. Peter followed at a distance. 55But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56Then a servant girl saw him as he sat near the fire, and gazed at him, and said, “This man was with Him.”
57But he denied Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
58A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59About an hour later another man firmly declared, “Certainly, this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean.”
60Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” Immediately, while he was yet speaking, the rooster crowed. 61#Lk 22:34The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62And Peter went outside and wept bitterly.
The Mocking and Whipping of Jesus
Mt 26:67–68; Mk 14:65
63#Jn 18:22The men who guarded Jesus mocked Him and whipped Him. 64When they had blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, “Prophesy! Who struck You?” 65And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
Jesus Before the Council
Mt 26:59–66; Mk 14:55–64; Jn 18:19–24
66#Mt 27:1; Mk 15:1When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him away to their council, saying, 67“Are You the Christ? Tell us!”
He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe. 68#Lk 20:3–7And if I also question you, you will not answer Me or release Me. 69#Mk 16:19; Ps 110:1From now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
70#Lk 23:3; Mt 26:64They all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”
He said to them, “You truly say that I am.”
71Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it from His own mouth.”
