The Fall of Jerusalem
2Ki 25:1–12; Jer 52:4–16
1#Jer 52:4–7; Eze 24:1–2In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it. 2In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the city wall was broken up. 3#Jer 21:4; 38:17All the officials of the king of Babylon entered and sat in the Middle Gate: Nergal-Sharezer, Samgar-Nebo, Sarsekim the Rabsaris,#Possibly Chief of Staff. Nergal-Sharezer the Rabmag,#Possibly the high official. and all the rest of the officials of the king of Babylon. 4#2Ch 32:5; Am 2:14When Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them and all the men of war, then they fled and went out of the city by night, by way of the king’s garden, by the gate between the two walls. And he went out the way of the Arabah.
5#2Ki 23:33; Jos 5:10But the Chaldeans’ army pursued after them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he passed sentence on him. 6#Jer 52:10; Dt 28:34Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes. Moreover, the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah. 7#Eze 12:13; Jdg 16:21He also put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him with chains to carry him to Babylon.
8#Ne 1:3; Jer 21:10The Chaldeans burned the king’s house and the houses of the people with fire and broke down the walls of Jerusalem. 9#Jer 40:1; Ge 37:36Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive into Babylon the remnant of the people who remained in the city, and those who fell away, who fell to him, with the rest of the people who remained. 10#2Ki 25:12; Jer 40:7But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left behind in the land of Judah the poor people who had nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at that time.
The Lord Delivers Jeremiah
11#Jer 15:21; Ac 24:23Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, saying, 12#Pr 16:7; Ps 105:14–15“Take him and look after him, and do not harm him. But do to him just as he says to you.” 13#Jer 39:3So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, Nebushazban the Rabsaris, Nergal-Sharezer the Rabmag, and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon 14#Jer 38:28; 2Ki 22:12sent and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison and committed him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, that he should take him home. So he lived among the people.
15Now the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying: 16#Da 9:12; Zec 1:6Go and speak to Ebed-Melek the Ethiopian, saying: Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: I will bring My words upon this city for harm and not for good. And they shall be accomplished in that day before you. 17#Ps 41:1–2; 50:15But I will deliver you in that day, says the Lord, and you shall not be given into the hand of the men of whom you are afraid. 18#Jer 21:9; 38:2For I will surely deliver you, and you will not fall by the sword; but your life will be as plunder to you, because you have put your trust in Me, says the Lord.
