The Discipline of the Lord
1Therefore, since we are encompassed with such a great cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. 2#Heb 1:3; Lk 24:26Let us look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3#Gal 6:9; Heb 12:5For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and your hearts give up.
4#Heb 10:32–34You have not yet resisted to bloodshed while striving against sin. 5#Pr 3:11–12And you have forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons:
“My son, do not despise the discipline from the Lord,
nor grow weary when you are rebuked by Him;
6#Rev 3:19; Ps 119:75; Pr 3:12 for whom the Lord loves He disciplines,
and scourges every son whom He receives.”
7#Pr 13:24; 19:18Endure discipline; God is dealing with you as with sons. For what son is there whom a father does not discipline? 8If you are without discipline, of which everyone has partaken, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9#Nu 16:22; 27:16Furthermore, we have had human fathers, and they corrected us, and we gave them reverence. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10#2Pe 1:4For they indeed disciplined us for a short time according to their own judgment, but He does so for our profit, that we may partake of His holiness. 11#Isa 32:17; Jas 3:17–18Now no discipline seems to be joyful at the time, but grievous. Yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness in those who have been trained by it.
12#Isa 35:3; Job 4:3–4Therefore lift up your tired hands, and strengthen your weak knees. 13#Gal 6:1; Pr 4:26–27Make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame go out of joint, but rather be healed.
Warning Against Rejecting God’s Grace
14#Ro 14:19; 2Co 7:1Pursue peace with all men, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord, 15#Gal 5:4; Heb 3:12; Dt 29:18watching diligently so that no one falls short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness spring up to cause trouble, and many become defiled by it, 16#Heb 13:4; Ge 25:31–34lest there be any sexually immoral or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. For he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.
18#Dt 4:11; Ex 20:18You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and storm, 19#Dt 18:16; 4:12and to the sound of a trumpet and to a voice speaking words, such that those who heard them begged that the word not be spoken to them anymore. 20#Ex 19:12–13For they could not endure that which was commanded: “If so much as a beast touches the mountain, it must be stoned or thrust through with a spear.”#Ex 19:12–13. 21#Ex 19:16So terrible was the sight that Moses said, “I am terrified and trembling.”#Dt 9:19.
22#Gal 4:26; Ps 48:2But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels; 23#Lk 10:20; Ge 18:25to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, who are enrolled in heaven; to God, the Judge of all; and to the spirits of the righteous ones made perfect; 24#Ge 4:10; Heb 11:4; 8:6and to Jesus, the Mediator of a new covenant; and to the sprinkled blood that speaks better than that of Abel.
25#Heb 8:5; 11:7See that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused Him who spoke on earth, much less shall we escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven. 26#Ex 19:18At that time His voice shook the earth, but now He has given us a promise, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also heaven.”#Hag 2:6. 27And this statement, “Yet once more,” signifies the removal of those things that can be shaken, things that are created, so that only those things that cannot be shaken will remain.
28#Da 2:44; Heb 13:15Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be moved, let us be gracious, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29#Dt 4:24; 9:3For our God is a consuming fire.

1 Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Yeshua, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him who has endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you don’t grow weary, fainting in your souls. 4You have not yet resisted to blood, striving against sin. 5You have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with children,
“My son, don’t take lightly the chastening of the Lord,
nor faint when you are reproved by him;
6 for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines,
and chastises every son whom he receives.”#Proverbs 3:11-12
7 It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with children, for what son is there whom his father doesn’t discipline? 8But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not children. 9Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10For they indeed for a few days disciplined us as seemed good to them, but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. 11All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. 12Therefore lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees, #Isaiah 35:3 13and make straight paths for your feet,#Proverbs 4:26 so what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.
14 Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord, 15looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you and many be defiled by it, 16lest there be any sexually immoral person or profane person, like Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal. 17For you know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for a change of mind though he sought it diligently with tears.
18 For you have not come to a mountain that might be touched and that burnt with fire, and to blackness, darkness, storm, 19the sound of a shofar, and the voice of words; which those who heard it begged that not one more word should be spoken to them, 20for they could not stand that which was commanded, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned”.#12:20 TR adds “or shot with an arrow”#Exodus 19:12-13 21So fearful was the appearance that Moses said, “I am terrified and trembling.”#Deuteronomy 9:19
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable multitudes of angels, 23to the festal gathering and assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24to Yeshua, the mediator of a new covenant,#Jeremiah 31:31 and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better than that of Abel.
25See that you don’t refuse him who speaks. For if they didn’t escape when they refused him who warned on the earth, how much more will we not escape who turn away from him who warns from heaven, 26whose voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens.”#Haggai 2:6 27This phrase, “Yet once more” signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain. 28Therefore, receiving a Kingdom that can’t be shaken, let’s have grace, through which we serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe, 29for our God is a consuming fire.#Deuteronomy 4:24
