David Anointed King Over Israel
1Ch 11:1–3
1#1Ch 11:1–3; Ge 29:14All of the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your bone and flesh. 2#1Sa 18:13; 2Sa 7:7Previously, when Saul was king over us, you were the one leading Israel out and in. Also, the Lord said to you: You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over Israel.”
3#2Sa 2:4; Jdg 11:11So all of the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them before the Lord at Hebron. They anointed David king over Israel.
4#1Ch 26:31; 29:27David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5#2Sa 2:11; 1Ch 3:4He reigned over Judah from Hebron for seven years and six months, and he reigned over all of Israel and Judah from Jerusalem for thirty-three years.

6#Jdg 1:8; Jos 15:63The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, who were living in the land. They said to David, “You will not enter here; even the blind and the lame will turn you away”—thinking, “David cannot enter here.” 7#1Ki 2:10; 2Sa 6:12Nevertheless, David overthrew the stronghold of Zion, which is now the City of David.
8David said on that day, “Whoever defeats the Jebusites, let him go through the water shaft to reach the lame and the blind, who are despised by David.” Therefore, it is said, “The blind and lame shall not come into the house.”
9#1Ki 9:15; 9:24So David occupied the stronghold, and he called it the City of David. He built on all sides from the terraces inward. 10#2Sa 3:1David went on and became great, because the Lord, the God of Hosts, was with him.
11#1Ch 14:1; 1Ki 5:1–2King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar wood, carpenters, and stonemasons, and they built a house for David. 12Then David understood that the Lord had appointed him king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
13#1Ch 3:9; Dt 17:17David took more concubines and wives in Jerusalem, after having come from Hebron, and they bore him more sons and daughters. 14These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.
David Defeats the Philistines
1Ch 14:8–17
17#2Sa 23:14; 1Ch 11:16When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all of the Philistines went up to search for David, but David heard about this and went down to the stronghold. 18#Jos 15:8; Ge 14:5Now the Philistines had come and were spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 19#2Sa 2:1; 1Sa 23:2So David asked the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?”
The Lord said to David, “Go up, because I will certainly give them into your hand.”
20#Isa 28:21So David came to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there. He said, “The Lord has breached my enemies before me like bursting tides.” Therefore, he named that place Baal Perazim. 21#Dt 7:5The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.
22Once again, the Philistines went up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23When David inquired of the Lord, He said, “You shall not go up. Circle around behind them and come against them opposite the trees. 24#Jdg 4:14; 2Ki 7:6When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the trees, pay attention, because at that point the Lord is going before you to defeat the army of the Philistines.” 25#1Ch 14:16So David did just as the Lord commanded, and he defeated the Philistines from Geba as far as Gezer.

David Is Made King of Israel
1Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron. They said to him, “Look, we are your own family. 2In the past Saul was king over us. But you were the one leading us in battle for Israel. The Lord said to you, ‘You will be like a shepherd for my people, the Israelites. You will become their ruler.’”
3All the elders of Israel came to King David at Hebron. Then he made an agreement with them in Hebron in front of the Lord. Then they poured oil on David to make him king over Israel.
4David was 30 years old when he became king. He ruled 40 years. 5He was king over Judah in Hebron for 7 years and 6 months. And he was king over all Israel and Judah in Jerusalem for 33 years.
6The king and his men went to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You can’t come into our city. Even our people who are blind and crippled can stop you.” They said this because they thought David could not enter their city. 7But David did take the city of Jerusalem with its strong walls. It became the City of David.
8That day David said to his men, “To defeat the Jebusites you must go through the water tunnel. Then you can reach those ‘crippled’ and ‘blind’ enemies. This is why people say, ‘The blind and the crippled cannot enter the palace.’”
9So David lived in the city with its strong walls. He called it the City of David. David built more buildings around it. He began where the land was filled in on the east side of the city. He also built more buildings inside the city. 10He became stronger and stronger, because the Lord of heaven’s armies was with him.
11Hiram king of the city of Tyre sent messengers to David. He also sent cedar logs, carpenters and men to cut stone. They built a palace for David. 12Then David knew the Lord really had made him king of Israel. And he knew the Lord had made his kingdom very important. This was because the Lord loved his people, the Israelites.
13In Jerusalem David took for himself more slave women and wives. This was after he moved there from Hebron. More sons and daughters were born to David. 14These are the names of the sons born to David in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.
David Defeats the Philistines
17Now the Philistines heard that David had been made king over Israel. So all the Philistines went to look for him. But when David heard the news, he went down to a safe place. 18So the Philistines came and camped in the Valley of Rephaim. David asked the Lord, “Should I attack the Philistines? Will you help me defeat them?”
19The Lord said to David, “Go! I will certainly help you defeat them.”
20So David went to Baal Perazim and defeated the Philistines there. David said, “Like a flood of water, the Lord has broken through my enemies.” So David named the place Baal Perazim.# This name means “the Lord breaks through.” 21The Philistines left their idols behind at Baal Perazim. And David and his men carried these idols away.
22Once again the Philistines came and camped at the Valley of Rephaim. 23David prayed to the Lord. This time the Lord told David, “Don’t attack the Philistines from the front. Instead, go around them. Attack them opposite the balsam trees. 24You will hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees. Then you must act quickly. I, the Lord, will have gone ahead of you and defeated the Philistine army.” 25So David did what the Lord commanded. He defeated the Philistines and chased them all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.
