David Anointed King Over Israel
1Ch 11:1–3
1#1Ch 11:1–3; Ge 29:14All of the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your bone and flesh. 2#1Sa 18:13; 2Sa 7:7Previously, when Saul was king over us, you were the one leading Israel out and in. Also, the Lord said to you: You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over Israel.”
3#2Sa 2:4; Jdg 11:11So all of the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them before the Lord at Hebron. They anointed David king over Israel.
4#1Ch 26:31; 29:27David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5#2Sa 2:11; 1Ch 3:4He reigned over Judah from Hebron for seven years and six months, and he reigned over all of Israel and Judah from Jerusalem for thirty-three years.
David Conquers Jerusalem
1Ch 3:5–9; 11:4–9; 14:1–7
6#Jdg 1:8; Jos 15:63The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, who were living in the land. They said to David, “You will not enter here; even the blind and the lame will turn you away”—thinking, “David cannot enter here.” 7#1Ki 2:10; 2Sa 6:12Nevertheless, David overthrew the stronghold of Zion, which is now the City of David.
8David said on that day, “Whoever defeats the Jebusites, let him go through the water shaft to reach the lame and the blind, who are despised by David.” Therefore, it is said, “The blind and lame shall not come into the house.”
9#1Ki 9:15; 9:24So David occupied the stronghold, and he called it the City of David. He built on all sides from the terraces inward. 10#2Sa 3:1David went on and became great, because the Lord, the God of Hosts, was with him.
11#1Ch 14:1; 1Ki 5:1–2King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar wood, carpenters, and stonemasons, and they built a house for David. 12Then David understood that the Lord had appointed him king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
13#1Ch 3:9; Dt 17:17David took more concubines and wives in Jerusalem, after having come from Hebron, and they bore him more sons and daughters. 14These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.
David Defeats the Philistines
1Ch 14:8–17
17#2Sa 23:14; 1Ch 11:16When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all of the Philistines went up to search for David, but David heard about this and went down to the stronghold. 18#Jos 15:8; Ge 14:5Now the Philistines had come and were spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 19#2Sa 2:1; 1Sa 23:2So David asked the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?”
The Lord said to David, “Go up, because I will certainly give them into your hand.”
20#Isa 28:21So David came to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there. He said, “The Lord has breached my enemies before me like bursting tides.” Therefore, he named that place Baal Perazim. 21#Dt 7:5The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.
22Once again, the Philistines went up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23When David inquired of the Lord, He said, “You shall not go up. Circle around behind them and come against them opposite the trees. 24#Jdg 4:14; 2Ki 7:6When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the trees, pay attention, because at that point the Lord is going before you to defeat the army of the Philistines.” 25#1Ch 14:16So David did just as the Lord commanded, and he defeated the Philistines from Geba as far as Gezer.

The Israelites Make David King
1All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron. They said to David, “Look, we are one family#5:1 one family Literally, “your flesh and blood.”! 2Even when Saul was our king, you were the one who led us into battle. And you were the one who brought Israel back home from war. The Lord himself said to you, ‘You will be the shepherd of my people, the Israelites. You will be the ruler over Israel.’”
3So all the leaders of Israel came to meet with King David at Hebron. He made an agreement with them in Hebron in front of the Lord, and they anointed David to be the king of Israel.
4David was 30 years old when he began to rule. He was king for 40 years. 5In Hebron he ruled over Judah for 7 years and 6 months, and in Jerusalem he ruled over all Israel and Judah for 33 years.
David Captures Jerusalem
6The king and his men went to fight against the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. The Jebusites said to David, “You cannot come into our city.#5:6 You cannot come … city The city of Jerusalem was built on a hill. It had high walls around it, making it hard to capture. Even our blind and crippled people can stop you.” (They said this because they thought that David would not be able to enter into their city. 7But David did take the fort of Zion. This fort became the City of David.)
8That day David said to his men, “Whenever you strike at the Jebusites, aim for the throat and kill them.”#5:8 Whenever … kill them Or “Whoever wants to attack the Jebusites must go through the shaft.” This might refer to a tunnel or shaft leading up into the city through Gihon Spring, which was outside the city walls. David said this because he hates to have people left who are crippled and blind. That is why people now say, “The lame and blind are not allowed in the temple.#5:8 temple Or “the king’s palace.””
9David lived in the fort and called it “The City of David.” David built up the city from the Millo#5:9 Millo This is probably the stone foundation walls that were built on the steep slopes on the east side of the City of David. inward.#5:9 inward Or “toward the Temple.” 10He became stronger and stronger because the Lord All-Powerful was with him.
11King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David. He also sent cedar trees, carpenters, and stonemasons. They built a house for David. 12Then David knew that the Lord had really made him king of Israel and had made him ruler over his kingdom for the good of his people, Israel.
13David moved from Hebron to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, he got more slave women and wives. So David had more children who were born in Jerusalem. 14David’s sons who were born in Jerusalem are Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.
David Fights Against the Philistines
17When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had anointed David to be the king of Israel, all the Philistines went up to kill him. David heard about this and went down into the fort at Jerusalem. 18The Philistines came and camped in Rephaim Valley.
19David asked the Lord, saying, “Should I go up to fight against the Philistines? Will you help me defeat them?”
The Lord answered, “Yes, I certainly will help you defeat the Philistines.”
20Then David went to Baal Perazim and defeated the Philistines in that place. He said, “The Lord broke through my enemies like water breaking through a dam.” That is why David named that place “Baal Perazim.”#5:20 Baal Perazim This name means “the Lord breaks through.” 21The Philistines left the statues of their gods behind at Baal Perazim. David and his men took them away.
22Again the Philistines came up and camped in Rephaim Valley.
23David prayed to the Lord again and got this answer: “Don’t go up the valley. Go around them to the other side of their army. Attack them from the other side of the balsam trees. 24When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, you must act quickly because that is the sign that the Lord has gone out in front of you to defeat the Philistines.#5:24 Or “From the top of the balsam trees you will be able to hear them marching into battle. Then you must act quickly, because at that time the Lord will go ahead of you and defeat the Philistines for you.””
25David did what the Lord commanded him to do, and he defeated the Philistines. He chased them from Geba to Gezer, killing them all along the way.
