1 Thessalonians 5
5
1Concerning the times and the seasons, # Ac 1:7 brothers, you have no need that I write to you. # 1Th 4:9 2For you know perfectly that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. # 2Pe 3:10; Rev 3:3 3When they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor upon a woman with child, # Mt 24:4–21; Lk 21:20–24 and they shall not escape.
4But you, brothers, are not in darkness # 1Jn 2:8 so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5You are all the sons of light and the sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. # Lk 16:8; Ac 26:18 6Therefore let us not sleep as others do. But let us be alert and sober. # Lk 22:46; 1Pe 1:13 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. # Ac 2:15 8But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. # Isa 59:17 9For God has not appointed us to wrath, # 1Th 1:10 but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, # 2Th 2:13–14 10who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we should live together with Him. # 2Co 5:15 11So comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, just as you are doing. # Eph 4:29; Heb 10:25
Final Exhortations and Greetings
12We ask you, brothers, to acknowledge those who labor among you, and are appointed over you in the Lord, and instruct you. # 1Co 16:16, 18; Heb 13:17 13Esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves. # Mk 9:50 14Now we exhort you, brothers, warn those who are unruly, comfort the faint-hearted, support the weak, # Ac 20:35; Ro 14:1 and be patient toward everyone. 15See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone. # 1Pe 3:9 But always seek to do good to one another and to all. # Gal 6:10
16Rejoice always. # Php 4:4 17Pray without ceasing. # Lk 18:1; Eph 6:18 18In everything give thanks, # Eph 5:20; Heb 13:15 for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19Do not quench the Spirit. # 1Co 14:30; Eph 4:30; 1Ti 4:14 20Do not despise prophecies. # 1Co 11:4; 14:1, 39 21Examine all things. # Lk 12:57; Ac 17:11; 1Jn 4:1 Firmly hold onto what is good. 22Abstain from all appearances of evil.
23May the very God of peace # Ro 15:33 sanctify you completely. And I pray to God that your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24Faithful is He who calls you, # 1Co 1:9; 1Th 2:12 who also will do it.
25Brothers, pray for us. 26Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. # Ro 16:16 27I command you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the holy brothers. # Col 4:16
28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. # Ro 16:20; 2Th 3:18
