Amos 8

A Vision of Ripe Fruit
1Then the Sovereign Lord showed me another vision. In it I saw a basket filled with ripe fruit. 2“What do you see, Amos?” he asked.
I replied, “A basket full of ripe fruit.”
Then the Lord said, “Like this fruit, Israel is ripe for punishment! I will not delay their punishment again. 3In that day the singing in the temple will turn to wailing. Dead bodies will be scattered everywhere. They will be carried out of the city in silence. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!”
4Listen to this, you who rob the poor
and trample down the needy!
5You can’t wait for the Sabbath day to be over
and the religious festivals to end
so you can get back to cheating the helpless.
You measure out grain with dishonest measures
and cheat the buyer with dishonest scales.#8:5 Hebrew You make the ephah [a unit for measuring grain] small and the shekel [a unit of weight] great, and you deal falsely by using deceitful balances.
6And you mix the grain you sell
with chaff swept from the floor.
Then you enslave poor people
for one piece of silver or a pair of sandals.
7Now the Lord has sworn this oath
by his own name, the Pride of Israel#8:7 Hebrew the pride of Jacob. See note on 3:13.:
“I will never forget
the wicked things you have done!
8The earth will tremble for your deeds,
and everyone will mourn.
The ground will rise like the Nile River at floodtime;
it will heave up, then sink again.
9“In that day,” says the Sovereign Lord,
“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth while it is still day.
10I will turn your celebrations into times of mourning
and your singing into weeping.
You will wear funeral clothes
and shave your heads to show your sorrow—
as if your only son had died.
How very bitter that day will be!
11“The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread or water
but of hearing the words of the Lord.
12People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from border to border#8:12 Hebrew from north to east.
searching for the word of the Lord,
but they will not find it.
13Beautiful girls and strong young men
will grow faint in that day,
thirsting for the Lord’s word.
14And those who swear by the shameful idols of Samaria—
who take oaths in the name of the god of Dan
and make vows in the name of the god of Beersheba#8:14 Hebrew the way of Beersheba.—
they will all fall down,
never to rise again.”

1 Thus the Lord GOD showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit.
2 He said, “Amos, what do you see?”
I said, “A basket of summer fruit.”
Then the LORD said to me,
“The end has come on my people Israel.
I will not again pass by them any more.
3 The songs of the temple will be wailing in that day,” says the Lord GOD.
“The dead bodies will be many. In every place they will throw them out with silence.
4 Hear this, you who desire to swallow up the needy,
and cause the poor of the land to fail,
5saying, ‘When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain?
And the Sabbath, that we may market wheat,
making the ephah#8:5 1 ephah is about 22 litres or about 2/3 of a bushel small, and the shekel#8:5 a normal shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces. large,
and dealing falsely with balances of deceit;
6 that we may buy the poor for silver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
and sell the sweepings with the wheat?’”
7 The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob,
“Surely I will never forget any of their works.
8Won’t the land tremble for this,
and everyone mourn who dwells in it?
Yes, it will rise up wholly like the River;
and it will be stirred up and sink again, like the River of Egypt.
9 It will happen in that day,” says the Lord GOD,
“that I will cause the sun to go down at noon,
and I will darken the earth in the clear day.
10 I will turn your feasts into mourning,
and all your songs into lamentation;
and I will make you wear sackcloth on all your bodies,
and baldness on every head.
I will make it like the mourning for an only son,
and its end like a bitter day.
11 Behold, the days come,” says the Lord GOD,
“that I will send a famine in the land,
not a famine of bread,
nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the LORD’s words.
12 They will wander from sea to sea,
and from the north even to the east;
they will run back and forth to seek the LORD’s word,
and will not find it.
13 In that day the beautiful virgins
and the young men will faint for thirst.
14Those who swear by the sin of Samaria,
and say, ‘As your god, Dan, lives,’
and, ‘As the way of Beersheba lives,’
they will fall, and never rise up again.”
