Matthew 28

He Is Risen
1Now #Mark 16:1–8; Luke 24:1–10; John 20:1–8after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene #Matt. 27:56, 61and the other Mary came to see the tomb. 2And behold, there was a great earthquake; for #Mark 16:5; Luke 24:4; John 20:12an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. 3#Dan. 7:9; 10:6; Mark 9:3; John 20:12; Acts 1:10His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like #Rev. 1:17dead men.
5But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6He is not here; for He is risen, #Hos. 6:2; Ps. 16:10; 49:15; Matt. 12:40; 16:21; 17:23; 20:19as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed #Matt. 26:32; 28:10, 16; Mark 16:7He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.”
8So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.
The Women Worship the Risen Lord
9And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, #Mark 16:9; John 20:14Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell #Ps. 22:22; John 20:17; Rom. 8:29; (Heb. 2:11)My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
The Soldiers Are Bribed
11Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened. 12When they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, 13saying, “Tell them, ‘His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.’ 14And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will appease him and make you secure.” 15So they took the money and did as they were instructed; and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
The Great Commission
16Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain #Matt. 26:32; 28:7, 10; Mark 14:28; 15:41; 16:7which Jesus had appointed for them. 17When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some #John 20:24–29doubted.
18And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, #(Dan. 7:13, 14); Matt. 11:27; Luke 1:32; 10:22; John 3:35; Acts 2:36; Rom. 14:9; 1 Cor. 15:27; (Eph. 1:10, 21); Phil. 2:9, 10; (Heb. 1:2); 1 Pet. 3:22“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19#Mark 16:15Go therefore and #Is. 52:10; Luke 24:47; (Acts 2:38, 39); Rom. 10:18; Col. 1:23make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20#(Acts 2:42)teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am #(Acts 4:31; 18:10; 23:11)with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Matthew 28
28
1After Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week,#28:1. This would correspond to the day we identify as Sunday. The text clearly identifies this as “day one,” the day after the Sabbath “the seventh day.” Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2All of a sudden there was a tremendous earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and rolled away the stone, and sat on it. 3His face blazed like lightning, and his clothes were as white as snow. 4The guards shook with fear, falling down as if they were dead.
5The angel told the women, “Don't be afraid! I know you're looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He's not here. He's risen from the dead, just as he said he would. Come and see where the Lord was lying. 7Now go quickly and tell his disciples that he's risen from the dead and that he's going on ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, I promise you!”
8They quickly left the tomb, both afraid and very happy, running to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus came to meet them, and greeted them. They went over to him, held on to his feet and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Don't be afraid! Go and tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there.”
11As they left, some of the guards went into the city and explained to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12After the chief priests had met with the elders, and worked out a plan, they bribed the soldiers with a great deal of money.
13“Say that his disciples came during the night and stole him while we were sleeping,” they told the soldiers. 14“And if the governor hears about this, we'll talk to him and you won't have to worry.”
15So the soldiers took the money and did what they were told. This story has been spread among the Jewish people to this very day.
16But the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him they worshiped him, though some doubted. 18Jesus came to them and told them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19So go and make disciples of people of all nations, and baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 20Teach them to follow all the commands I have given you. Remember, I am always with you, to the very end of the world.”
