Jesus Predicts the Destruction of the Temple
1Then #Mark 13:1; Luke 21:5–36Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. 2And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, #1 Kin. 9:7; Mic. 3:12; Luke 19:44not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”
The Signs of the Times and the End of the Age
3Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, #Mark 13:3the disciples came to Him privately, saying, #(Matt. 24:27, 37, 39; Luke 17:20–37; 1 Thess. 5:1–3)“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
4And Jesus answered and said to them: #Eph. 5:6; (Col. 2:8, 18; 2 Thess. 2:3; 1 John 4:1–3)“Take heed that no one deceives you. 5For #Jer. 14:14; John 5:43; Acts 5:36; (1 John 2:18; 4:3)many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ #Matt. 24:11and will deceive many. 6And you will hear of #(Rev. 6:2–4)wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7For #2 Chr. 15:6; Is. 19:2; Hag. 2:22; Zech. 14:13nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be #Acts 11:28; Rev. 6:5, 6famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9#Matt. 10:17; Luke 21:12; (John 16:2); Acts 4:2, 3; Rev. 2:10“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11Then #Acts 20:29; 2 Pet. 2:1; Rev. 13:11; 19:20many false prophets will rise up and #(1 Tim. 4:1)deceive many. 12And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow #(2 Thess. 2:3; 2 Tim. 3:1–3)cold. 13#Matt. 10:22; Mark 13:13But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14And this #Matt. 4:23gospel of the kingdom #Rom. 10:18; Col. 1:6, 23will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
The Great Tribulation
15#Mark 13:14; Luke 21:20; (John 11:48); Acts 6:13; 21:28“Therefore when you see the #Dan. 9:27; 11:31; 12:11‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” #Dan. 9:23(whoever reads, let him understand), 16“then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19But #Luke 23:29woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21For #Dan. 9:26then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; #Is. 65:8, 9; (Zech. 14:2)but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
23#Mark 13:21; Luke 17:23“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24For #Deut. 13:1; John 4:48; (2 Thess. 2:9); Rev. 13:13false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, #(John 6:37; Rom. 8:28; 2 Tim. 2:19)if possible, even the elect. 25See, I have told you beforehand.
26“Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. 27#Luke 17:24For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28#Job 39:30; Ezek. 39:17; Hab. 1:8; Luke 17:37For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.
The Coming of the Son of Man
29#(Dan. 7:11)“Immediately after the tribulation of those days #Is. 13:10; 24:23; Ezek. 32:7; Joel 2:10, 31; 3:15; Amos 5:20; 8:9; Zeph. 1:15; Matt. 24:29–35; Acts 2:20; Rev. 6:12–17; 8:12the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30#(Dan. 7:13, 14; Matt. 16:27; 24:3, 37, 39)Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, #Zech. 12:12and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31#Ex. 19:16; Deut. 30:4; Is. 27:13; Zech. 9:14; (1 Cor. 15:52; 1 Thess. 4:16); Heb. 12:19; Rev. 8:2; 11:15And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
The Parable of the Fig Tree
32“Now learn #Luke 21:29this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33So you also, when you see all these things, know #(James 5:9; Rev. 3:20)that it is near—at the doors! 34Assuredly, I say to you, #(Matt. 10:23; 16:28; 23:36)this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35#Ps. 102:25, 26; Is. 51:6; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33; (1 Pet. 1:23–25; 2 Pet. 3:10)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
No One Knows the Day or Hour
36#Mark 13:32; Acts 1:7; 1 Thess. 5:2; 2 Pet. 3:10“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, #Zech. 14:7but My Father only. 37But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38#(Gen. 6:3–5); Luke 17:26; (1 Pet. 3:20)For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 40#Luke 17:34Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. 41Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. 42#Matt. 25:13; Luke 21:36; 1 Thess. 5:6Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. 43#Luke 12:39; 1 Thess. 5:2; Rev. 3:3But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44#Luke 12:35–40; (1 Thess. 5:6)Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
The Faithful Servant and the Evil Servant
45#Luke 12:42–46; (Acts 20:28)“Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? 46#Rev. 16:15Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. 47Assuredly, I say to you that #Matt. 25:21, 23; Luke 22:29he will make him ruler over all his goods. 48But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master #(2 Pet. 3:4–9)is delaying his coming,’ 49and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, 50the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is #Mark 13:32not aware of, 51and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. #Matt. 8:12; 25:30There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

When the Temple Will Be Destroyed and the Signs of the End
1Jesus left the temple. He was walking away when his disciples came up to him. They wanted to call his attention to the temple buildings. 2“Do you see all these things?” Jesus asked. “What I’m about to tell you is true. Not one stone here will be left on top of another. Every stone will be thrown down.”
3Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives. There the disciples came to him in private. “Tell us,” they said. “When will this happen? And what will be the sign of your coming? What will be the sign of the end?”
4Jesus answered, “Keep watch! Be careful that no one fools you. 5Many will come in my name. They will claim, ‘I am the Messiah!’ They will fool many people. 6You will hear about wars. You will also hear people talking about future wars. Don’t be alarmed. Those things must happen. But the end still isn’t here. 7Nation will fight against nation. Kingdom will fight against kingdom. People will go hungry. There will be earthquakes in many places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains.
9“Then people will hand you over to be treated badly and killed. All nations will hate you because of me. 10At that time, many will turn away from their faith. They will hate each other. They will hand each other over to their enemies. 11Many false prophets will appear. They will fool many people. 12Because evil will grow, most people’s love will grow cold. 13But the one who remains strong in the faith will be saved. 14This good news of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world. It will be a witness to all nations. Then the end will come.
15“The prophet Daniel spoke about ‘the hated thing that destroys.’ (Daniel 9:27; 11:31; 12:11) Someday you will see it standing in the holy place. The reader should understand this. 16Then those who are in Judea should escape to the mountains. 17No one on the housetop should go down into the house to take anything out. 18No one in the field should go back to get their coat. 19How awful it will be in those days for pregnant women! How awful for nursing mothers! 20Pray that you will not have to escape in winter or on the Sabbath day. 21There will be terrible suffering in those days. It will be worse than any other from the beginning of the world until now. And there will never be anything like it again.
22“If the time had not been cut short, no one would live. But because of God’s chosen people, it will be shortened. 23At that time someone may say to you, ‘Look! Here is the Messiah!’ Or, ‘There he is!’ Do not believe it. 24False messiahs and false prophets will appear. They will do great signs and miracles. They will try to fool God’s chosen people if possible. 25See, I have told you ahead of time.
26“So if anyone tells you, ‘He is a long way out in the desert,’ do not go out there. Or if anyone says, ‘He is deep inside the house,’ do not believe it. 27Lightning that comes from the east can be seen in the west. It will be the same when the Son of Man comes. 28The vultures will gather wherever there is a dead body.
29“Right after the terrible suffering of those days,
“ ‘The sun will be darkened.
The moon will not shine.
The stars will fall from the sky.
The heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ (Isaiah 13:10; 34:4)
30“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven. At that time, all the peoples of the earth will mourn. They will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven. He will come with power and great glory. 31He will send his angels with a loud trumpet call. They will gather his chosen people from all four directions. They will bring them from one end of the heavens to the other.
32“Learn a lesson from the fig tree. As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33In the same way, when you see all these things happening, you know that the end is near. It is right at the door. 34What I’m about to tell you is true. The people living now will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35Heaven and earth will pass away. But my words will never pass away.
The Day and Hour Are Not Known
36“But no one knows about that day or hour. Not even the angels in heaven know. The Son does not know. Only the Father knows. 37Remember how it was in the days of Noah. It will be the same when the Son of Man comes. 38In the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking. They were getting married. They were giving their daughters to be married. They did all those things right up to the day Noah entered the ark. 39They knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be when the Son of Man comes. 40Two men will be in the field. One will be taken and the other left. 41Two women will be grinding with a hand mill. One will be taken and the other left.
42“So keep watch. You do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43You must understand something. Suppose the owner of the house knew what time of night the robber was coming. Then he would have kept watch. He would not have let his house be broken into. 44So you also must be ready. The Son of Man will come at an hour when you don’t expect him.
45“Suppose a master puts one of his slaves in charge of the other slaves in his house. The slave’s job is to give them their food at the right time. The master wants a faithful and wise slave for this. 46It will be good for the slave if the master finds him doing his job when the master returns. 47What I’m about to tell you is true. The master will put that slave in charge of everything he owns. 48But suppose that slave is evil. Suppose he says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time.’ 49Suppose he begins to beat the other slaves. And suppose he eats and drinks with those who drink too much. 50The master of that slave will come back on a day the slave doesn’t expect him. He will return at an hour the slave does not know. 51Then the master will cut him to pieces. He will send him to the place where pretenders go. There people will weep and grind their teeth.
