Jonah 2
2
1Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly. 2And he said:
“I #1 Sam. 30:6; Ps. 120:1; Lam. 3:55cried out to the Lord because of my affliction,
#Ps. 65:2And He answered me.
“Out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
And You heard my voice.
3#Ps. 88:6For You cast me into the deep,
Into the heart of the seas,
And the floods surrounded me;
#Ps. 42:7All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.
4#Ps. 31:22; Jer. 7:15Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight;
Yet I will look again #1 Kin. 8:38; 2 Chr. 6:38; Ps. 5:7toward Your holy temple.’
5The #Ps. 69:1; Lam. 3:54waters surrounded me, even to my soul;
The deep closed around me;
Weeds were wrapped around my head.
6I went down to the moorings of the mountains;
The earth with its bars closed behind me forever;
Yet You have brought up my #Job 33:28; (Ps. 16:10; Is. 38:17)life from the pit,
O Lord, my God.
7“When my soul fainted within me,
I remembered the Lord;
#2 Chr. 30:27; Ps. 18:6And my prayer went up to You,
Into Your holy temple.
8“Those who regard #2 Kin. 17:15; Ps. 31:6; Jer. 10:8worthless idols
Forsake their own Mercy.
9But I will #Ps. 50:14, 23; Jer. 33:11; Hos. 14:2sacrifice to You
With the voice of thanksgiving;
I will pay what I have #Job 22:27; (Eccl. 5:4, 5)vowed.
#Ps. 3:8; (Is. 45:17)Salvation is of the #(Jer. 3:23)Lord.”
10So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Jonah's Prayer
1From deep inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God:
2“In my distress, O LORD, I called to you,
and you answered me.
From deep in the world of the dead
I cried for help, and you heard me.
3You threw me down into the depths,
to the very bottom of the sea,
where the waters were all round me,
and all your mighty waves rolled over me.
4I thought I had been banished from your presence
and would never see your holy Temple again.
5The water came over me and choked me;
the sea covered me completely,
and seaweed was wrapped round my head.
6I went down to the very roots of the mountains,
into the land whose gates lock shut for ever.#2.6 the land whose gates lock shut for ever: A reference to the world of the dead (see 2.2).
But you, O LORD my God,
brought me back from the depths alive.
7When I felt my life slipping away,
then, O LORD, I prayed to you,
and in your holy Temple you heard me.
8Those who worship worthless idols
have abandoned their loyalty to you.
9But I will sing praises to you;
I will offer you a sacrifice
and do what I have promised.
Salvation comes from the LORD!”
10Then the LORD ordered the fish to spew Jonah up on the beach, and it did.
