The Eighth Plague: Locusts
1Now the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh; #Ex. 4:21; 7:14; 9:12; 10:27; 11:10; 14:4; Josh. 11:20; John 12:40; Rom. 9:18for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his servants, #Ex. 7:4; 9:16that I may show these signs of Mine before him, 2and that #Ex. 12:26; 13:8, 14; Deut. 4:9; 6:7; 11:19; Ps. 44:1; 78:5; Joel 1:3you may tell in the hearing of your son and your son’s son the mighty things I have done in Egypt, and My signs which I have done among them, that you may #Ex. 7:5, 17; 8:22know that I am the Lord.”
3So Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: ‘How long will you refuse to #(1 Kin. 21:29; 2 Chr. 34:27); Job 42:6; (James 4:10; 1 Pet. 5:6)humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may #Ex. 4:23; 8:1; 9:1serve Me. 4Or else, if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring #Prov. 30:27; Rev. 9:3locusts into your territory. 5And they shall cover the face of the earth, so that no one will be able to see the earth; and #Ex. 9:32; Joel 1:4; 2:25they shall eat the residue of what is left, which remains to you from the hail, and they shall eat every tree which grows up for you out of the field. 6They shall #Ex. 8:3, 21fill your houses, the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians—which neither your fathers nor your fathers’ fathers have seen, since the day that they were on the earth to this day.’ ” And he turned and went out from Pharaoh.
7Then Pharaoh’s #Ex. 7:5; 8:19; 9:20; 12:33servants said to him, “How long shall this man be #Ex. 23:33; Josh. 23:13; 1 Sam. 18:21; Eccl. 7:26; 1 Cor. 7:35a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God. Do you not yet know that Egypt is destroyed?”
8So Moses and Aaron were brought again to Pharaoh, and he said to them, “Go, serve the Lord your God. Who are the ones that are going?”
9And Moses said, “We will go with our young and our old; with our sons and our daughters, with our flocks and our herds we will go, for #Ex. 5:1; 7:16we must hold a feast to the Lord.”
10Then he said to them, “The Lord had better be with you when I let you and your little ones go! Beware, for evil is ahead of you. 11Not so! Go now, you who are men, and serve the Lord, for that is what you desired.” And they were driven #Ex. 10:28out from Pharaoh’s presence.
12Then the Lord said to Moses, #Ex. 7:19“Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come upon the land of Egypt, and #Ex. 10:5, 15eat every herb of the land—all that the hail has left.” 13So Moses stretched out his rod over the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an east wind on the land all that day and all that night. When it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14And #Deut. 28:38; Ps. 78:46; 105:34the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested on all the territory of Egypt. They were very severe; #Joel 1:4, 7; 2:1–11; Rev. 9:3previously there had been no such locusts as they, nor shall there be such after them. 15For they #Ex. 10:5covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they #Ps. 105:35ate every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left. So there remained nothing green on the trees or on the plants of the field throughout all the land of Egypt.
16Then Pharaoh called #Ex. 8:8for Moses and Aaron in haste, and said, #Ex. 9:27“I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17Now therefore, please forgive my sin only this once, and #Ex. 8:8, 28; 9:28; 1 Kin. 13:6entreat the Lord your God, that He may take away from me this death only.” 18So he #Ex. 8:30went out from Pharaoh and entreated the Lord. 19And the Lord turned a very strong west wind, which took the locusts away and blew them #Joel 2:20into the Red Sea. There remained not one locust in all the territory of Egypt. 20But the Lord #Ex. 4:21; 10:1; 11:10hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go.
The Ninth Plague: Darkness
21Then the Lord said to Moses, #Ex. 9:22“Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness which may even be felt.” 22So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was #Ps. 105:28; Rev. 16:10thick darkness in all the land of Egypt #Ex. 3:18three days. 23They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. #Ex. 8:22, 23But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
24Then Pharaoh called to Moses and #Ex. 8:8, 25; 10:8said, “Go, serve the Lord; only let your flocks and your herds be kept back. Let your #Ex. 10:10little ones also go with you.”
25But Moses said, “You must also give us sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God. 26Our #Ex. 10:9livestock also shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind. For we must take some of them to serve the Lord our God, and even we do not know with what we must serve the Lord until we arrive there.”
27But the Lord #Ex. 4:21; 10:1, 20; 14:4, 8hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go. 28Then Pharaoh said to him, #Ex. 10:11“Get away from me! Take heed to yourself and see my face no more! For in the day you see my face you shall die!”
29So Moses said, “You have spoken well. #Ex. 11:8; Heb. 11:27I will never see your face again.”

Deus ameaça Faraó com a praga dos gafanhotos
1Depois, disse o Senhor a Moisés: Entra a Faraó, porque tenho agravado o seu coração #Êx 7.13-14e o coração de seus servos, para fazer estes meus sinais no meio deles, 2e para que contes aos ouvidos de teus filhos #Dt 4.9; Sl 44.1; 78.5e dos filhos de teus filhos as coisas que fiz no Egito e os meus sinais que tenho feito entre eles; para que saibais que eu sou o Senhor.
3Assim, foram Moisés e Arão a Faraó e disseram-lhe: Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus dos hebreus: #1Rs 21.29; 2Cr 7.14; 33.12,19; Jó 42.6; Tg 4.10Até quando recusas humilhar-te diante de mim? Deixa ir o meu povo, para que me sirva. 4Porque, se ainda recusares deixar ir o meu povo, #Pv 30.2eis que trarei amanhã gafanhotos aos teus termos, 5e cobrirão a face da terra, que a terra não se poderá ver; e eles comerão o resto do que escapou, o que ficou da saraiva; #Êx 9.32também comerão toda árvore que vos cresce no campo; 6e encherão as tuas casas, e as casas de todos os teus servos, e as casas de todos os egípcios, como nunca viram teus pais, nem os pais de teus pais, desde o dia em que eles foram sobre a terra até o dia de hoje. E virou-se e saiu da presença de Faraó.
7E os servos de Faraó disseram-lhe: Até quando este nos dá de ser por laço? #Js 23.13Deixa ir os homens, para que sirvam ao Senhor, seu Deus; ainda não sabes que o Egito está destruído? 8Então, Moisés e Arão foram levados outra vez a Faraó, e ele disse-lhes: Ide, servi ao Senhor, vosso Deus. Quais são os que hão de ir? 9E Moisés disse: Havemos de ir com nossos meninos e com os nossos velhos; com os nossos filhos, e com as nossas filhas, e com as nossas ovelhas, e com os nossos bois havemos de ir; porque festa do Senhor temos. 10Então, ele lhes disse: Seja o Senhor assim convosco, como eu vos deixarei ir a vós e a vossos filhos; olhai que há mal diante da vossa face. 11Não será assim; andai agora vós, varões, e servi ao Senhor; pois isso é o que pedistes. E os lançaram da face de Faraó.
A praga dos gafanhotos
12Então, disse o Senhor a Moisés: Estende a tua mão sobre a terra do Egito, para que os gafanhotos venham sobre a terra do Egito e comam toda a erva da terra, tudo o que deixou a saraiva. 13Então, estendeu Moisés sua vara sobre a terra do Egito, e o Senhor trouxe sobre a terra um vento oriental todo aquele dia e toda aquela noite; e aconteceu que pela manhã o vento oriental trouxe os gafanhotos. 14E vieram #Sl 78.46; 105.34os gafanhotos sobre toda a terra do Egito e assentaram-se sobre todos os ermos do Egito; mui gravosos foram; antes destes nunca houve tais gafanhotos, nem depois deles virão outros tais. 15Porque cobriram a face de toda a terra, de modo que a terra se escureceu; e comeram toda a erva da terra e todo o fruto das árvores, que deixara a saraiva; e não ficou verdura alguma nas árvores, nem erva do campo, em toda a terra do Egito. 16Então, Faraó se apressou a chamar a Moisés e a Arão e disse: Pequei contra o Senhor, vosso Deus, #Êx 9.27e contra vós. 17Agora, pois, peço-vos que perdoeis o meu pecado somente desta vez e que oreis ao Senhor, vosso Deus, que tire de mim somente esta #1Rs 13.6morte. 18E saiu da presença de Faraó e orou ao Senhor. 19Então, o Senhor trouxe um vento ocidental fortíssimo, o qual levantou os gafanhotos e os lançou no mar Vermelho; nem ainda um gafanhoto ficou em todos os termos do Egito. 20O Senhor, porém, endureceu o coração de Faraó, #Êx 4.21e este não deixou ir os filhos de Israel.
A praga das trevas
21Então, disse o Senhor a Moisés: Estende a tua mão para o céu, e virão trevas sobre a terra do Egito, trevas que se apalpem. 22E Moisés estendeu a sua mão para o céu, e houve trevas espessas em toda a terra do Egito por três dias. 23Não viu um ao outro, e ninguém se levantou do seu lugar por três dias; mas todos os filhos de Israel tinham luz em suas #Êx 8.22; 9.4,26; 12.13habitações. 24Então, Faraó chamou a Moisés e disse: Ide, servi ao Senhor; somente fiquem vossas ovelhas e vossas vacas; vão também convosco as vossas crianças. 25Moisés, porém, disse: Tu também darás em nossas mãos sacrifícios e holocaustos, que ofereçamos ao Senhor, nosso Deus. 26E também o nosso gado há de ir conosco, nem uma unha ficará; porque daquele havemos de tomar para servir ao Senhor, nosso Deus; porque não sabemos com que havemos de servir ao Senhor, até que cheguemos lá. 27O Senhor, porém, endureceu #Êx 10.1,20; 14.4,8o coração de Faraó, e este não os quis deixar ir. 28E disse-lhe Faraó: Vai-te de mim e guarda-te que não mais vejas o meu rosto; porque, no dia em que vires o meu rosto, morrerás. 29E disse Moisés: Bem disseste; #Hb 11.27eu nunca mais verei o teu rosto.
