Jesus Before Pilate

1Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.

2“Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

3The chief priests accused him of many things. 4So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”

5But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.

6Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

9“Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate, 10knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.

12“What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.

13“Crucify him!” they shouted.

14“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

16The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!” 19Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion of Jesus

21A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.

25It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.

27They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28]#15:28 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Luke 22:37. 29Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus

33At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).#15:34 Psalm 22:1

35When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

36Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

37With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

38The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,#15:39 Some manuscripts saw that he died with such a cry he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

40Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,#15:40 Greek Joses, a variant of Joseph; also in verse 47 and Salome. 41In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.

The Burial of Jesus

42It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, 43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid.

1И едва рассвело, как весь Совет — первосвященники со старейшинами и книжниками — уже принял свое решение#15:1 Друг. возм. пер.: собрались для совещания.. Связав Иисуса, отвели Его и передали Пилату.

2«Ты и в самом деле — Царь иудейский?» — спросил Его Пилат.

«Да, ты сам говоришь это», — ответил ему Иисус.

3Много обвинений против Него выдвигали первосвященники, 4так что Пилат опять спросил Его: «Тебе нечего сказать? Смотри, сколько против Тебя обвинений».

5Но Иисус и на это ничего не ответил и сильно тем удивил Пилата.

6По праздникам Пилат обычно освобождал одного узника — любого, за которого народ просил. 7А случилось так, что в тюрьме был тогда вместе со своими сообщниками, совершившими убийство во время смуты, один человек по прозвищу Варавва.

8Когда же народ пришел и стал просить Пилата сделать то, что он и прежде для них делал, 9он спросил их: «Хотите, чтобы я отпустил вам Царя иудейского?» 10Ибо знал Пилат, что первосвященники выдали Иисуса из зависти. 11Но первосвященники подговорили народ просить освобождения не Иисуса, а Вараввы#15:11 Букв.: возбудили толпу, чтобы он отпустил им лучше Варавву..

12Пилат обратился к ним еще раз: «Тогда что же мне сделать с Тем, [Кого вы называете] „Царем иудейским“?»

13«Распни Его!» — закричали они снова.

14«Какое же Он совершил преступление?» — спросил Пилат.

Но они кричали еще громче: «Распни Его!»

15Тогда Пилат, желая угодить толпе, освободил им Варавву, Иисуса же велел он бичевать, а затем передал Его на распятие.

Иисус выставлен на посмешище

16Солдаты увели Его во дворец, в так называемый преторий#15:16 Так называлась резиденция наместника в римских провинциях., и созвали туда всю когорту. 17Они накинули на Него пурпурный плащ и, сплетя из колючек венок, надели Ему на голову, 18и стали выкрикивать: «Да здравствует#15:18 Букв.: радуйся — форма приветствия. „Царь иудейский“!» 19Они били Его палкой по голове, и плевали в Него, и, глумясь, опускались на колени, кланяясь Ему. 20А когда вдоволь наглумились над Ним, сняли с Него пурпурный плащ, одели Его в собственную Его одежду и вывели Его из города, чтобы распять Его.

Распятие

21Один человек по имени Симон, родом из Кирены, отец Александра и Руфа, возвращался в то время с поля. Его заставили нести крест Иисуса. 22И привели они Иисуса на место, называемое Голгофа (что в переводе значит «Череп»). 23Ему давали вина, настоянного на горьких травах#15:23 Букв.: вина со смирною., но Он не стал пить. 24И распяли они Его, и разделили между собой одежды Его, бросая о них жребий, кому что взять.

25Был же девятый час, когда распяли Его. 26Надпись над Его головой говорила о том, в чем была Его вина: «ЦАРЬ ИУДЕЙСКИЙ». 27С Ним распяли двух преступников, одного справа, а другого слева от Него. 28[]#15:28 Некот. рукописи добавляют: и исполнилось Писание, которое говорит: «И к беззаконным причтен». 29Прохожие поносили Его. Презрительно качая головами, они говорили: «Эй Ты, собиравшийся разрушить Храм и восстановить его в три дня?! 30Спаси же Себя Самого, сойди с креста!»

31Также и первосвященники вместе с книжниками, насмехаясь, говорили между собой: «Других спасал, а Себя спасти не может. 32Если Он Мессия, Царь Израиля, пусть теперь сойдет с креста, чтобы мы увидели и поверили!» И даже те, кто был распят с Ним вместе, осыпали Его оскорблениями.

Смерть Иисуса

33В полдень настала тьма по всей земле, и так продолжалось до трех часов пополудни. 34И в три часа Иисус громко воскликнул: «Элои, Элои, лема сабахтани?», что в переводе значит: «Боже Мой, Боже Мой, зачем оставил Ты Меня?»#15:34 Пс 22 (21):2.

35Услышав это, некоторые из стоявших рядом говорили: «Смотри, Он Илию зовет».

36А кто-то побежал, намочил губку уксусом#15:36 Или: винным уксусом; или: кислым напитком. и, насадив ее на палку, подал Иисусу, чтобы пил Тот. «Давайте посмотрим, — сказал он, — придет ли Илия снять Его».

37Иисус же, вскрикнув громко, испустил дух.

38И завеса в Храме разорвалась надвое, сверху донизу. 39Центурион, стоявший у креста, напротив Него, увидев, как Иисус#15:39 Некот. рукописи добавляют: так возгласив. умер, сказал: «Воистину Этот Человек был Сыном Божьим».

40Было там и несколько женщин, смотревших издали: среди них были и Мария Магдалина, и Мария, мать Иакова младшего и Иосита, и Саломия, 41которые еще с того времени, как Он был в Галилее, следовали за Ним и служили Ему, и многие другие, пришедшие с Ним в Иерусалим.

Погребение

42Это была пятница#15:42 Букв.: (день) приготов ления — день подготовки к субботе., канун субботы, так что, когда наступил вечер, 43Иосиф из Аримафеи, уважаемый член Совета, один из тех, кто ожидал пришествия Царства Божия, осмелился прийти к Пилату и попросил у него тело Иисуса. 44Пилат удивился, что Он уже мертв и, позвав центуриона, спросил у него, на самом ли деле#15:44 Или: спросил у него, как давно. Иисус уже умер. 45Центурион подтвердил это, и#15:45 Букв.: и узнав от центуриона. Пилат разрешил Иосифу взять тело. 46Тогда Иосиф купил льняное полотно, снял тело и, обернув тем полотном, положил его в гробницу, которая была высечена в скале, и привалил камень ко входу в гробницу. 47А Мария Магдалина и Мария, мать Иосита, видели, куда положили тело Иисуса.
