Job 22
22
Eliphaz
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2“Can a man be of benefit to God?
Can even a wise person benefit him?
3What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous?
What would he gain if your ways were blameless?
4“Is it for your piety that he rebukes you
and brings charges against you?
5Is not your wickedness great?
Are not your sins endless?
6You demanded security from your relatives for no reason;
you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked.
7You gave no water to the weary
and you withheld food from the hungry,
8though you were a powerful man, owning land—
an honored man, living on it.
9And you sent widows away empty-handed
and broke the strength of the fatherless.
10That is why snares are all around you,
why sudden peril terrifies you,
11why it is so dark you cannot see,
and why a flood of water covers you.
12“Is not God in the heights of heaven?
And see how lofty are the highest stars!
13Yet you say, ‘What does God know?
Does he judge through such darkness?
14Thick clouds veil him, so he does not see us
as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.’
15Will you keep to the old path
that the wicked have trod?
16They were carried off before their time,
their foundations washed away by a flood.
17They said to God, ‘Leave us alone!
What can the Almighty do to us?’
18Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things,
so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.
19The righteous see their ruin and rejoice;
the innocent mock them, saying,
20‘Surely our foes are destroyed,
and fire devours their wealth.’
21“Submit to God and be at peace with him;
in this way prosperity will come to you.
22Accept instruction from his mouth
and lay up his words in your heart.
23If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored:
If you remove wickedness far from your tent
24and assign your nuggets to the dust,
your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines,
25then the Almighty will be your gold,
the choicest silver for you.
26Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty
and will lift up your face to God.
27You will pray to him, and he will hear you,
and you will fulfill your vows.
28What you decide on will be done,
and light will shine on your ways.
29When people are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’
then he will save the downcast.
30He will deliver even one who is not innocent,
who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”

Job 22
22
Eliphaz Speaks: Admit You Are Wicked, Job
1Then Eliphaz from Teman replied ⌞to Job⌟,
2“Can a human be of any use to God
when even a wise person is only useful to himself?
3Is the Almighty pleased when you are righteous?
Does he gain anything when you follow the path of integrity?
4Does God correct you
and bring you into a court of law because you fear him?
5“Aren’t you really very wicked?
Is there no end to your wrongdoing?
6For no reason you take your brothers’ goods as security for a loan
and strip them of their clothes.#22:6 Clothes were often used as security deposits for loans in biblical times.
7You don’t even give a tired person a drink of water,
and you take food away from hungry people.
8A strong person owns the land.
A privileged person lives in it.
9You send widows away empty-handed,
and the arms of orphans are broken.
10That is why traps are all around you
and great fear suddenly grips you.
11 ⌞That is why⌟ darkness surrounds you and you cannot see
and a flood of water covers you.
12“Isn’t God high above in the heavens?
Look how high the highest stars are!
13You ask, ‘What does God know?
Can he judge ⌞anything⌟ from behind a dark cloud?
14Thick clouds surround him so that he cannot see.
He walks above the clouds.’
15“Are you following the old path that wicked people have taken?
16They are snatched up before their time.
A river washes their foundation away.
17They told God, ‘Leave us alone!
What can the Almighty do for us?’
18Yet, he filled their homes with good things.
(The plan of the wicked is foreign to my way of thinking.)
19The righteous saw it and were glad,
and the innocent made fun of them by saying,
20‘Indeed, their wealth has been wiped out,
and a fire has burned up what ⌞little⌟ they had left.’
Make Peace with God
21“Be in harmony and at peace with God.
In this way you will have prosperity.
22Accept instruction from his mouth,
and keep his words in your heart.
23If you return to the Almighty, you will prosper.
If you put wrongdoing out of your tent,
24and lay your gold down in the dust,
and put your gold from Ophir among the pebbles in the rivers,
25then the Almighty will become your gold
and your large supply of silver.
26Then you will be happy with the Almighty
and look up toward God.
27You will pray to him, and he will listen to you,
and you will keep your vow to him.
28When you promise to do something, you will succeed,
and light will shine on your path.
29When others are discouraged, you will say, ‘Cheer up!’
Then he will save the humble person.#22:29 Or “you will say, ‘It’s conceit.’ But he will save the humble person.”
30He will rescue one who is not innocent.
That person will be rescued by your purity.”
