Psalm 40
To the Overcomer, A Psalm of David.
1¶ I waited patiently for the Lord, and he inclined unto me and heard my cry.
2He brought me up also out of the pit of hopelessness, out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock and straightened my steps.
3And he has put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God; many shall see it and fear and shall wait on the Lord.
4Blessed is that man that makes the Lord his trust and does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
5Thou hast increased, O Lord my God, thy wonderful works which thou hast done and thy thoughts regarding us; they are beyond our ability to express, declare, or speak; they cannot be told.
6¶ Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened; burnt offering and sin offering thou hast not required.
7Then said I, Behold, I come; in the volume of the book it is written of me,
8I delight to do thy will, O my God; thy law is within my bowels.
9I have preached righteousness in the great congregation; behold, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest.
10I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy truth and thy salvation; I have not concealed thy mercy and thy truth from the great congregation.
11¶ Do not withhold thy tender mercies from me, O Lord; let thy mercy and thy truth continually preserve me.
12For innumerable evils have compassed me about; my iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to see; they are more than the hairs of my head; therefore my heart fails me.
13Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; O Lord, make haste to help me.
14Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my life to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.
15Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.
16Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee; let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified.
17When I am poor and needy; the Lord will remember me; thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

Psalm 40
For the choir director; a psalm by David.
1I waited patiently for the Lord.
He turned to me and heard my cry for help.
2He pulled me out of a horrible pit,
out of the mud and clay.
He set my feet on a rock
and made my steps secure.
3He placed a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see this and worship.
They will trust the Lord.
4Blessed is the person
who places his confidence in the Lord
and does not rely on arrogant people
or those who follow lies.
5You have done many miraculous things, O Lord my God.
You have made many wonderful plans for us.
No one compares to you!
I will tell others about your miracles,
which are more than I can count.
6You were not pleased with sacrifices and offerings.
You have dug out two ears for me.
You did not ask for burnt offerings or sacrifices for sin.
7Then I said, “I have come!
(It is written about me in the scroll of the book.)
8I am happy to do your will, O my God.”
Your teachings are deep within me.
9I will announce the good news of righteousness
among those assembled for worship.
I will not close my lips.
You know that, O Lord.
10I have not buried your righteousness deep in my heart.
I have been outspoken about your faithfulness and your salvation.
I have not hidden your mercy and your truth
from those assembled for worship.
11Do not withhold your compassion from me, O Lord.
May your mercy and your truth always protect me.
12Countless evils have surrounded me.
My sins have caught up with me so that I can no longer see.
They outnumber the hairs on my head.
I have lost heart.
13O Lord, please rescue me!
Come quickly to help me, O Lord! #40:13 Verses 13–17 are virtually identical in wording to Psalm 70.
14Let all those who seek to end my life
be confused and put to shame.
Let those who want my downfall
be turned back and disgraced.
15Let those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
be stunned by their own shame.
16Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad because of you.
Let those who love your salvation continually say,
“The Lord is great!”
17But I am oppressed and needy.
May the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my savior.
O my God, do not delay!
