James and John, the sons of Zebedee (Jesus named them Boanerges, which means “Sons of Thunder”), Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who later turned against Jesus. Then Jesus went home, but again a crowd gathered. There were so many people that Jesus and his followers could not eat. When his family heard this, they went to get him because they thought he was out of his mind. But the teachers of the law from Jerusalem were saying, “Beelzebul is living inside him! He uses power from the ruler of demons to force demons out of people.” So Jesus called the people together and taught them with stories. He said, “Satan will not force himself out of people. A kingdom that is divided cannot continue, and a family that is divided cannot continue. And if Satan is against himself and fights against his own people, he cannot continue; that is the end of Satan. No one can enter a strong person’s house and steal his things unless he first ties up the strong person. Then he can steal things from the house. I tell you the truth, all sins that people do and all the things people say against God can be forgiven. But anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of a sin that continues forever.” Jesus said this because the teachers of the law said that he had an evil spirit inside him. Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to tell him to come out. Many people were sitting around Jesus, and they said to him, “Your mother and brothers are waiting for you outside.” Jesus asked, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” Then he looked at those sitting around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! My true brother and sister and mother are those who do what God wants.”

Explore how God can help you find family — or be family for someone in need!
The Holy Spirit uses God’s Word to grow believers in their faith and increase their passion for Jesus. Break down the book of Mark into the “Big Picture” of the passage, then “Digging Deeper” into that section and then move into “Living Out” the lessons that are taught in the passage in this 5-day reading plan.
Who are you becoming? If you envision yourself at age 70, 80, or 100, what kind of person do you see on the horizon? Does the projection in your mind fill you with hope? Or dread? In this devotional, John Mark Comer shows us how we can be spiritually formed to become more like Jesus day by day.
Many are called, few are commissioned. Jesus gives his followers a taste of going out to preach, teach, and heal. Going in faith, they experience amazing powers that Christ endowed them. Christ also appraises them of the discipline and sacrifice involved, with far greater rewards for service. While service is highly monetized these days, there are still the few serving in tune with their Master in Heaven. Perhaps little-known today but famous in Heaven.
