Jesus Heals a Soldier’s Servant
1When Jesus finished saying all these things to the people, he went to Capernaum. 2There was an army officer who had a servant who was very important to him. The servant was so sick he was nearly dead. 3When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant. 4The men went to Jesus and begged him, saying, “This officer is worthy of your help. 5He loves our people, and he built us a synagogue.”
6So Jesus went with the men. He was getting near the officer’s house when the officer sent friends to say, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, because I am not worthy to have you come into my house. 7That is why I did not come to you myself. But you only need to command it, and my servant will be healed. 8I, too, am a man under the authority of others, and I have soldiers under my command. I tell one soldier, ‘Go,’ and he goes. I tell another soldier, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and my servant does it.”
9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, this is the greatest faith I have found anywhere, even in Israel.”
10Those who had been sent to Jesus went back to the house where they found the servant in good health.
Jesus Brings a Man Back to Life
11Soon afterwards Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his followers and a large crowd traveled with him. 12When he came near the town gate, he saw a funeral. A mother, who was a widow, had lost her only son. A large crowd from the town was with the mother while her son was being carried out. 13When the Lord saw her, he felt very sorry for her and said, “Don’t cry.” 14He went up and touched the coffin, and the people who were carrying it stopped. Jesus said, “Young man, I tell you, get up!” 15And the son sat up and began to talk. Then Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16All the people were amazed and began praising God, saying, “A great prophet has come to us! God has come to help his people.”
17This news about Jesus spread through all Judea and into all the places around there.
John Asks a Question
18John’s followers told him about all these things. He called for two of his followers 19and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the One who is to come, or should we wait for someone else?”
20When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you with this question: ‘Are you the One who is to come, or should we wait for someone else?’ ”
21At that time, Jesus healed many people of their sicknesses, diseases, and evil spirits, and he gave sight to many blind people. 22Then Jesus answered John’s followers, “Go tell John what you saw and heard here. The blind can see, the crippled can walk, and people with skin diseases are healed. The deaf can hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is preached to the poor. 23Those who do not stumble in their faith because of me are blessed!”
24When John’s followers left, Jesus began talking to the people about John: “What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed blown by the wind? 25What did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, people who have fine clothes and much wealth live in kings’ palaces. 26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, and I tell you, John is more than a prophet. 27This was written about him:
‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare the way for you.’#Malachi 3:1
28I tell you, John is greater than any other person ever born, but even the least important person in the kingdom of God is greater than John.”
29(When the people, including the tax collectors, heard this, they all agreed that God’s teaching was good, because they had been baptized by John. 30But the Pharisees and experts on the law refused to accept God’s plan for themselves; they did not let John baptize them.)
31Then Jesus said, “What shall I say about the people of this time? What are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the marketplace, calling to one another and saying,
‘We played music for you, but you did not dance;
we sang a sad song, but you did not cry.’
33John the Baptist came and did not eat bread or drink wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon in him.’ 34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! He eats too much and drinks too much wine, and he is a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35But wisdom is proved to be right by what it does.”
A Woman Washes Jesus’ Feet
36One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, so Jesus went into the Pharisee’s house and sat at the table. 37A sinful woman in the town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house. So she brought an alabaster jar of perfume 38and stood behind Jesus at his feet, crying. She began to wash his feet with her tears, and she dried them with her hair, kissing them many times and rubbing them with the perfume. 39When the Pharisee who asked Jesus to come to his house saw this, he thought to himself, “If Jesus were a prophet, he would know that the woman touching him is a sinner!”
40Jesus said to the Pharisee, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
Simon said, “Teacher, tell me.”
41Jesus said, “Two people owed money to the same banker. One owed five hundred coins and the other owed fifty. 42They had no money to pay what they owed, but the banker told both of them they did not have to pay him. Which person will love the banker more?”
43Simon, the Pharisee, answered, “I think it would be the one who owed him the most money.”
Jesus said to Simon, “You are right.” 44Then Jesus turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I came into your house, you gave me no water for my feet, but she washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. 45You gave me no kiss of greeting, but she has been kissing my feet since I came in. 46You did not put oil on my head, but she poured perfume on my feet. 47I tell you that her many sins are forgiven, so she showed great love. But the person who is forgiven only a little will love only a little.”
48Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49The people sitting at the table began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50Jesus said to the woman, “Because you believed, you are saved from your sins. Go in peace.”

Luke 7
7
1And when he had completed all his words in the hearing of the people, he entered into Capernaum. 2And a certain centurion's bondman who was dear to him was ill and about to die; 3and having heard of Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, begging him that he might come and save his bondman. 4But they, being come to Jesus, besought him diligently, saying, He is worthy to whom thou shouldest grant this, 5for he loves our nation, and himself has built the synagogue for us. 6And Jesus went with them. But already, when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent to him friends, saying to him, Lord, do not trouble thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof. 7Wherefore neither did I count myself worthy to come to thee. But say by a word and my servant shall be healed. 8For I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers, and I say to this one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my bondman, Do this, and he does it. 9And Jesus hearing this wondered at him, and turning to the crowd following him said, I say to you, Not even in Israel have I found so great faith. 10And they who had been sent returning to the house found the bondman, who was ill, in good health.
11And it came to pass afterwards he went into a city called Nain, and many of his disciples and a great crowd went with him. 12And as he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was carried out, the only son of his mother, and she a widow, and a very considerable crowd of the city was with her. 13And the Lord, seeing her, was moved with compassion for her, and said to her, Weep not; 14and coming up he touched the bier, and the bearers stopped. And he said, Youth, I say to thee, Wake up. 15And the dead sat up and began to speak; and he gave him to his mother. 16And fear seized on all, and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet has been raised up amongst us; and God has visited his people. 17And this report went out in all Judaea concerning him, and in all the surrounding country. 18And the disciples of John brought him word concerning all these things:
19and John, having called two of his disciples, sent to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that is coming, or are we to wait for another? 20But the men having come to him said, John the baptist has sent us to thee, saying, Art thou he that is coming, or are we to wait for another? 21In that hour he healed many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and to many blind he granted sight. 22And Jesus answering said to them, Go, bring back word to John of what ye have seen and heard: that blind see, lame walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf hear, dead are raised, poor are evangelized; 23and blessed is whosoever shall not be offended in me. 24And the messengers of John having departed, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken by the wind? 25But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in delicate garments? Behold, those who are in splendid clothing and live luxuriously are in the courts of kings. 26But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and what is more excellent than a prophet. 27This is he concerning whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee; 28for I say unto you, Among them that are born of women a greater prophet is no one than John the baptist; but he who is a little one in the kingdom of God is greater than he. 29(And all the people who heard it, and the tax-gatherers, justified God, having been baptised with the baptism of John; 30but the Pharisees and the lawyers rendered null as to themselves the counsel of God, not having been baptised by him.) 31To whom therefore shall I liken the men of this generation, and to whom are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the market-place, and calling one to another and saying, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. 33For John the baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and ye say, He has a demon. 34The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and ye say, Behold an eater and wine-drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners; 35and wisdom has been justified of all her children.
36But one of the Pharisees begged him that he would eat with him. And entering into the house of the Pharisee he took his place at table; 37and behold, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, and knew that he was sitting at meat in the house of the Pharisee, having taken an alabaster box of myrrh, 38and standing at his feet behind him weeping, began to wash his feet with tears; and she wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the myrrh. 39And the Pharisee who had invited him, seeing it, spoke with himself saying, This person if he were a prophet would have known who and what the woman is who touches him, for she is a sinner. 40And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. And he says, Teacher, say it. 41There were two debtors of a certain creditor: one owed five hundred denarii and the other fifty; 42but as they had nothing to pay, he forgave both of them their debt: say, which of them therefore will love him most? 43And Simon answering said, I suppose he to whom he forgave the most. And he said to him, Thou hast rightly judged. 44And turning to the woman he said to Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house; thou gavest me not water on my feet, but she has washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with her hair. 45Thou gavest me not a kiss, but she from the time I came in has not ceased kissing my feet. 46My head with oil thou didst not anoint, but she has anointed my feet with myrrh. 47For which cause I say to thee, Her many sins are forgiven; for she loved much; but he to whom little is forgiven loves little. 48And he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven. 49And they that were with them at table began to say within themselves, Who is this who forgives also sins? 50And he said to the woman, Thy faith has saved thee; go in peace.
