Leviticus 24

The Lampstand and the Holy Bread

1The Lord said to Moses, 2“Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil from crushed olives. That oil is for the lamps so that these lamps may never go out. 3Aaron will keep the lamps burning in the Meeting Tent from evening until morning before the Lord; this is in front of the curtain of the Ark of the Agreement. This law will continue from now on. 4Aaron must always keep the lamps burning on the lampstands of pure gold before the Lord.

5“Take fine flour and bake twelve loaves of bread with it, using four quarts of flour for each loaf. 6Put them in two rows on the golden table before the Lord, six loaves in each row. 7Put pure incense on each row as the memorial portion to take the place of the bread. It is an offering made by fire to the Lord. 8Every Sabbath day Aaron will put the bread in order before the Lord, as an agreement with the people of Israel that will continue forever. 9That bread will belong to Aaron and his sons. They will eat it in a holy place, because it is a most holy part of the offerings made by fire to the Lord. That bread is their share forever.”

The Man Who Cursed God

10Now there was a son of an Israelite woman and an Egyptian father who was walking among the Israelites. A fight broke out in the camp between him and an Israelite. 11The son of the Israelite woman began cursing and speaking against the Lord, so the people took him to Moses. (The mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri from the family of Dan.) 12The people held him as a prisoner while they waited for the Lord’s command to be made clear to them.

13Then the Lord said to Moses, 14“Take the one who spoke against me outside the camp. Then all the people who heard him must put their hands on his head, and all the people must throw stones at him and kill him. 15Tell the people of Israel this: ‘If anyone curses his God, he is guilty of sin. 16Anyone who speaks against the Lord must be put to death; all the people must kill him by throwing stones at him. Foreigners must be punished just like the people born in Israel; if they speak against the Lord, they must be put to death.

17“ ‘Whoever kills another person must be put to death. 18Whoever kills an animal that belongs to another person must give that person another animal to take its place. 19And whoever causes an injury to a neighbor must receive the same kind of injury in return: 20Broken bone for broken bone, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Anyone who injures another person must be injured in the same way in return. 21Whoever kills another person’s animal must give that person another animal to take its place. But whoever kills another person must be put to death.

22“ ‘The law will be the same for the foreigner as for those from your own country. I am the Lord your God.’ ”

23Then Moses spoke to the people of Israel, and they took the person who had cursed outside the camp and killed him by throwing stones at him. So the people of Israel did as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Taking Care of the Lamps

(Exodus 27.20,21)

1The Lord told Moses 2to give the following orders to the people of Israel: Bring pure olive oil of the finest quality for the lamps in the Tent, so that a light might be kept burning regularly. 3Each evening Aaron shall light them and keep them burning until morning, there in the Lord's presence outside the curtain in front of the Covenant Box, which is in the Most Holy Place. This regulation is to be observed for all time to come. 4Aaron shall take care of the lamps on the lampstand of pure gold and must see that they burn regularly in the Lord's presence.

The Bread Offered to God

5 # Ex 25.30 Take twenty-four pounds of flour and bake twelve loaves of bread. 6Put the loaves in two rows, six in each row, on the table covered with pure gold, which is in the Lord's presence. 7Put some pure incense on each row, as a token food offering to the Lord to take the place of the bread. 8Every Sabbath, for all time to come, the bread must be placed in the presence of the Lord. This is Israel's duty forever. 9#Mt 12.4; Mk 2.26; Lk 6.4 The bread belongs to Aaron and his descendants, and they shall eat it in a holy place, because this is a very holy part of the food offered to the Lord for the priests.

An Example of Just and Fair Punishment

10-11There was a man whose father was an Egyptian and whose mother was an Israelite named Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri from the tribe of Dan. There in the camp this man quarreled with an Israelite. During the quarrel he cursed the Lord, so they took him to Moses, 12put him under guard, and waited for the Lord to tell them what to do with him.

13The Lord said to Moses, 14“Take that man out of the camp. Everyone who heard him curse shall put his hands on the man's head to testify that he is guilty, and then the whole community shall stone him to death. 15Then tell the people of Israel that anyone who curses God must suffer the consequences 16and be put to death. Any Israelite or any foreigner living in Israel who curses the Lord shall be stoned to death by the whole community.

17 # Ex 21.12 “Any who commit murder shall be put to death, 18and any who kill an animal belonging to someone else must replace it. The principle is a life for a life.

19“If any of you injure another person, whatever you have done shall be done to you. 20#Ex 21.23-25; Dt 19.21; Mt 5.38 If you break a bone, one of your bones shall be broken; if you put out an eye, one of your eyes shall be put out; if you knock out a tooth, one of your teeth shall be knocked out. Whatever injury you cause another person shall be done to you in return. 21Whoever kills an animal shall replace it, but whoever kills a human being shall be put to death. 22#Nu 15.16 This law applies to all of you, to Israelites and to foreigners living among you, because I am the Lord your God.”

23When Moses had said this to the people of Israel, they took the man outside the camp and stoned him to death. In this way the people of Israel did what the Lord had commanded Moses.
