The Betrayal
1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. 2And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. 3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? 5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. 7Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 8Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: 9that the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. 10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. 11Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
12Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, 13and led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. 14Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
15And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. 16But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. 18And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
19The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. 20Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. 21Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. 22And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? 23Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? 24Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
25And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. 26One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? 27Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.
The Trial
28Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. 29Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? 30They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. 31Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: 32that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.
33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 34Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? 35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? 36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. 37Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. 38Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?
And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. 39But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? 40Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested
1 When#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“had said”) which is understood as temporal Jesus had said these things, he went out with his disciples to the other side of the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden into which he and his disciples entered. 2(Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, also knew about the place, because Jesus often gathered there with his disciples.) 3So Judas, taking the cohort and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4Then Jesus, because he#*Here “because” is supplied as a component of the participle (“knew”) which is understood as causal knew all the things that were coming upon him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?” 5They replied to him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am he.”#*Here the predicate nominative is supplied from context in the English translation (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was also standing with them.) 6So when he said to them, “I am he,”#*Here the predicate nominative is supplied from context in the English translation they drew back#Literally “they went to the back” and fell to the ground. 7Then he asked them again, “Who are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” 8Jesus replied, “I said to you that I am he!#*Here the predicate nominative is supplied from context in the English translation So if you are looking for me, let these men go,” 9in order that the word that he had spoken would be fulfilled: “Those whom you have given to me—I have not lost anyone of them.”#A paraphrase of the statement in John 17:12
10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. (Now the name of the slave was Malchus.) 11So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into its#*Literally “the”; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun sheath! The cup that the Father has given me—shall I not drink it?”
Jesus Taken to Annas
12Then the cohort and the military tribune and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and tied him up, 13and brought him#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14(Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it was better that one man die for the people.)
Peter Denies Jesus the First Time
15So Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. (Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.) 16But Peter was standing by the door outside. So the other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in. 17Then the female slave who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You are not also one of the disciples of this man, are you?”#*The negative construction in Greek anticipates a negative answer here, indicated in the translation by the phrase “are you” He said, “I am not!” 18(Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were warming themselves. And Peter was also standing there with them and warming himself.)
Jesus Before Annas
19So the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. 20Jesus replied to him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple courts#*Here “courts” is supplied to distinguish this area from the interior of the temple building itself where all the Jews assemble, and I have said nothing in secret. 21Why are you asking me? Ask those who heard what I have said to them! Behold, these people know what I said.” 22Now when#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“had said”) he had said these things, one of the officers who was standing by gave a slap in the face to Jesus, saying, “Do you reply to the high priest in this way?” 23Jesus replied to him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify about what is wrong! But if I have spoken#*The phrase “I have spoken” is an implied repetition of the earlier phrase in this verse correctly, why do you strike me?” 24Then Annas sent him, tied up, to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter Denies Jesus the Second and Third Times
25Now Simon Peter was standing there and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?”#*The negative construction in Greek anticipates a negative answer here, indicated in the translation by the phrase “are you” He denied it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation and said, “I am not!” 26One of the slaves of the high priest, who was related to the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27So Peter denied it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation again, and immediately a rooster crowed.
Jesus Brought Before Pilate
28Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor’s residence. Now it was early, and they did not enter into the governor’s residence so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. 29So Pilate came outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30They answered and said to him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have handed him over to you!” 31So Pilate said to them, “You take him and judge him according to your law!” The Jews said to him, “It is not permitted for us to kill anyone,” 32in order that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled that he had spoken, indicating by what sort of death he was going to die.
Pilate Questions Jesus
33Then Pilate entered again into the governor’s residence and summoned Jesus and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” 34Jesus replied, “Do you say this from yourself, or have others said this#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation to you about me?” 35Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I?#*The negative construction in Greek anticipates a negative answer here, indicated in the translation by the phrase “am I” Your people and the chief priests handed you over to me! What have you done?” 36Jesus replied, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here.” 37Then Pilate said to him, “So then you are a king!” Jesus replied, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I have come into the world: in order that I can testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.” 38Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
And when he#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“had said”) which is understood as temporal had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no basis for an accusation against him. 39But it is your custom that I release for you one prisoner#*The word “prisoner” is not in the Greek text, but is implied at the Passover. So do you want me#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation to release for you the king of the Jews?” 40Then they shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.)#Or perhaps “robber”
