Tamil

Tamil is an official language in India, Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Gospel of Mark

The Gospel of Mark in Tamil was transliterated into Roman character by Hannah Wilder (wife of Dr E.W. Wilder) of Nagpur. She transliterated the Bower/Union version of the Tamil Bible into modified Roman script. It was published by the Christian Literature Society for India at Madras in 1952. This was very popular and she spent many years transliterating the Bower/Union version of the Tamil Bible into modified Roman script. The New Testament was published by the Trinitarian Bible Society in 1956.

Romanised Tamil

Tamil is sometimes written in Roman script. The form used in this Gospel of Mark uses only lower case letters. The character transcribed as "r" in "thamir" and "yerudhina" is a special character, resembling "r" printed upside down. Roman script is useful to those Tamil speakers who are not literate in Tamil script, especially those in Diaspora.
