Why You Should Listen to Dreamers

A global poll revealed that only 15% of employees are engaged at work. It’s slightly higher in the US, at 30%.

That means two things:

  • Only 15% of millions of workers find meaning in the work they are doing,
  • An overwhelming 85% of people are dissatisfied with their job or manager.

What can you do when you feel your work doesn’t matter? Your work has more meaning when you consider yourself part of the team.

After Joseph was released from prison and interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, he displayed remarkable perspective:

“This food will be a reserve supply for our country during the seven years of famine that will happen in Egypt. Then the land will not be ruined by the famine.” – Genesis 41:36 GW

In this passage, Joseph identified himself as an Egyptian — not a captive or a servant — when he said, “our country.”

Your work has two layers, whether you are a leader, manager, or an employee — to listen to dreamers and help interpret the dreams so they succeed.

When your approach to your work is to listen and respond with your insight, intellect, experience, and wisdom, you provide the interpretation of how to solve a problem (a disturbing dream) or achieve a goal (a defining dream).

This way, you will be like Joseph, allowing God to speak and work through you.

That’s how you find meaning in the work you do every day and become one of the 15% who changes the future.

Ask yourself:

Do I think of myself as part of the team where I work?

For reflection:

Father, on the days when my job isn’t fulfilling, remind me that you gave me everything. Everything. Help me be content. Just like I’m an essential member of your church, the body of Christ, I’m part of a team helping others grow, solve problems, and succeed in life. Amen.
